FIRST NATIONS’
FUTURES PROGRAMME
Building indigenous capacity in research and development
is the aim of the First Nations’ Futures Program.
The programme started in October 2008 and will run until
May 2009. It is an international collaboration between Te
Rünanga o Ngäi Tahu and Kamehameha Schools (Hawaii),
and is supported by Stanford University (California) and
the University of Hawai’i.
It is hoped the programme will ultimately contribute to
improving the well-being of indigenous communities and
inform the sustainable management of their natural and
cultural resources.
The programme is building research capacity within Mäori
and Hawaiian communities through its connection with
world-class academic research groups and through the
innovative integration of western academic knowledge
with indigenous tikanga and values.
As one of four Mäori fellows on the 2008 programme,
Te Puni Kökiri’s Rangimarie Mules (Ngäi Tahu, Te Ätiawa)
has found the programme informative through its focus on
how knowledge and leadership can be practically applied
at the community level.
The programme features case studies from America,
Aotearoa, and Hawaii.
PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE
AN IWI-FOCUSED APPROACH
Massey University is leading an innovative project aimed at
developing iwi policy, planning and programme delivery. The
project, entitled “The Quantification of Iwi Development”
will highlight the value and role of Mäori culture across
disciplines such as social policy, economic policy and
environmental management by employing a framework
capable of measuring iwi aspirations, distinctiveness,
capability, potential and outcomes.
