WORDS OF WELCOME
Dear colleague,
On behalf of the Hellenic Society of Blood Transfusion and the Hellenic Society of Hematology, I am
delighted to invite you to attend the XV Regional Congress of the International Society of Blood
Transfusion, Europe.
The Congress will be held in the ”International Conference Center, Megaron the Athens Concert Hall”,
a stunning new cultural center in the heart of Athens. In the aftermath of the 2004 Olympic Games,
Athens will be more attractive than ever, with generously upgraded hotels, renovated museums,
exquisite restaurants, and a state-of-the-art transportation network.
The scientific programme of the XVth Congress will start with education sessions, which will offer
comprehensive background for the scientific sessions to follow.
The plenary and simultaneous symposia will cover a wide range of topics, so as to attract the interest of
all professionals, from those working in the preparation and transfusion of blood to those conducting
basic research. The Athens Congress will also feature Pro-Con discussions and a workshop on scientific
writing, as well as formal CME accreditation.
3
The diverse offerings of the Congress’s social programme, meanwhile, range from expertly guided tours
of Greece’s enchanting archaeological sites and its rich museums, to evenings at traditional taverns
and fine restaurants, featuring both popular and classical Greek music.
Since the Congress is in July, you might wish to combine your attendance at the Congress with a
holiday on one of Greece’s sublime islands or on its mainland, where you will be enjoying some of the
most beautiful beaches and countryside in Europe.
Transfusion medicine is making significant progress as a result of advances in basic research and
technology. The ISBT meeting is a unique opportunity to learn all about this progress and how it can
help advance your own work.
We hope that you will join us in Athens and look forward to welcoming you!
Alice Maniatis
Congress President
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome in Athens for the XV Regional ISBT Congress, Europe. Athens, is a most appropriate setting for
this meeting when one considers Greece’s contribution to the practice of medicine.
Indeed, the ISBT is delighted to host this event in such a historical setting, the land of Hippocrates,
the founder of medicine.
During this Congress the organisers wish to bridge the perceived gap between blood operators who
prepare the products and the transfusionnists who utilize them. To this end, several sessions are devoted
to adequate blood utilization and will focus on the most recent evidence-based transfusion practices.
In addition, this Congress will be an ideal venue to exchange ideas with your colleagues, to make new
acquaintances and to familiarize yourself with the most recent technology.
Before or after the Congress, make plans to spend some time to experience this unique city and
country. It is a wonderful setting for combining culture and rest.
A heartfelt thank you to the organisers of this meeting who have worked diligently to prepare a
programme which will fulfill your longing for up-to-date knowledge in the field of transfusion medicine.
I am looking forward to welcoming you personnally in Athens in July
Yours truly
Francine Décary
President of the ISBT

more columns, that you later join for the description of rows. Adjust the layout of the table, joining
and splitting cells, using the Tables and Borders Toolbar.
- Please take into account: Depending on the number of characters used per cell you will be able
to create a table with a maximum of 9 columns by 12 rows.
- Using the handles fit your table to the size of the slide. Either to the right and left and/or to the top
and bottom there should be no white borders around your table.
- Complete the table with your data.
- When cells still show a lot of white, enlarge the font size. Never use a font size smaller than 20 pt.
- Make a separate slide for each table.
- Save as a Joint Photographics Experts Group (jpeg). (The slides will now be exported to a directory
created by PowerPoint.)

Language setting of your keyboard
The keyboard configuration of computers in non-Western countries often causes problems with the
printing of the proceedings when special non-Western characters have been used. To avoid these
problems you need to change the language setting of your computer. This can be done by opening
“Start” then “Settings”, then “Control Panel” and then choosing “Keyboard.” Once in this menu, set the
language of your computer to English (United States) or US (International). Next, open MS Word (or the
word processing software you are using) and set the letter type to Arial - Western. In the preparation of
your abstract, if you require certain special characters that are not available, (e.g. ‘±’, ‘®’, ‘_’), use the
insert symbol feature (special characters). To do this, select Arial as the font (Unicoded, if possible),
then select the required character, and copy and paste the symbol into the text of the abstract. If a
special character is still not available, describe the character, e.g. ‘alpha’. Authors who do not want to
make use of the special character feature should put their references between brackets: (1).
Browser font preference
Before inserting/submitting your abstract select Unicode as the preferred font. If Unicode is not
available, please select Western.
Abstract review, selection and publication
1. An international panel of experts will review the abstracts. An abstract may be selected for an oral
or poster presentation.
2. The first (presenting) author will receive a confirmation of acceptance for oral presentation, poster
presentation, or a notice of rejection, by e-mail in April 2005. Oral presenters will be informed about
the type and the date of the session and presentation guidelines will be provided. Poster presenters
will be informed about the date of the poster session and will receive guidelines for their
presentation. All accepted abstracts will be included in the abstract book which will be published
by Vox Sanguinis.
