Dear Graduates:
You came to Southern planning to become successful in your lives. You had a vision of what
that success looked like and were hoping to find the tools to be successful. I hope you have
found that the more important vision is, as Albert Einstein said, “not to be a success but rather
to be of value.”
Life’s success is not found in things the world counts as success, like money and career. Life’s
fulfillment is found in being a servant to others and providing value to others. As Jesus said to
James and John, “whoever wants to be first must be your slave – just as the Son of Man did not
come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:27-28,
NIV).
Yours in Christ,
Gordon Bietz
President
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus hath fled
“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed;
For I am they God, and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.”
“When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,
And sanctify to thee they deepest distress.”
“The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to His foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake!”

The class of 2012 is proud to assert themselves as alumni of Southern Adventist University with the establishment
of the Class Affinity Fund Gift. The principles we have been taught, the values we have fostered, and
the education we have received will prove to be assets of immeasurable worth as we proceed through our personal,
professional, and spiritual lives. As no single department, club, or organization is responsible for this,
each individual of the class of 2012 has been beseeched to make a gift to the area that most impacted them,
establishing for themselves and future generations of students a lifelong spirit of giving.
Phil Garver, dean and professor for Southern Adventist University’s School of P.E., Health, and
Wellness, has been encouraging a life of wholeness in this institution and its surroundings communities
for more than 36 years.
Garver has guided a strong academic program, and under his leadership Southern has recently been
awarded the distinction of a fully accredited Wellness program. Another considerable accomplishment
is the ever-growing intramural sports program that engages over half of the students at the university.
A champion of wellness, Garver has spent three decades publishing a monthly newsletter urging
faculty and staff to become more physically active. This has helped control medical insurance expenses
and has earned the university national recognition through two Well Workplace awards from the
Wellness Council of America.
An additional milestone in Garver’s time with Southern was the completion of the Hulsey Wellness
Center, a magnificent state-of-the-art exercise and education complex. Architecturally imposing
and multi-functional, it draws faculty and students into vigorous activity and fellowship.
Garver’s vision and energy have stretched beyond the limits of this campus. Along with 11 other
like-minded individuals, he spent years lobbying, planning, and organizing the Veterans Memorial
Park of Collegedale. The community is culturally richer for this public space that Garver’s labor
helped bring about.
Because of his untiring leadership on campus and in the community, Southern Adventist
University is pleased to recognize Phil Garver as a worthy recipient of the Distinguished Service
Medallion for 2012, which includes a $500 honorarium.
Christine Moniyung came to the School of Nursing in June 2004. She currently teaches Adult
Health III while studying for her PhD and working as a Nurse Practitioner at Volunteers in Medicine.
She is much loved by her students as evidenced by 30 separate student nominations for this award.
Here is an example of student comments: “Christine does whatever it takes to help nursing
students grasp the most difficult concepts that need to be understood right before graduation as a
nurse. She’s firm and her students know what is expected of them, yet is compassionate and cares
deeply.” This sentiment was echoed repeatedly in the comments by her students. Her humble attitude
combined with her knowledge and enthusiasm make Moniyung a wonderful member of our faculty
and a pleasure to have as a colleague.
In recognition of her outstanding commitment to classroom teaching, Southern Adventist
University is proud to present Christine Moniyung with the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence,
which carries with it a $1,500 honorarium.

Ken Caviness has taught at Southern Adventist University since 1996. Prior to this, he taught
six years at Southwestern Adventist University and three years at Université Adventiste d’Afrique
Centrale, Rwanda, Africa. In addition to learning multiple languages and reading voraciously, he has
demonstrated scholarship in two significant areas.
Using his aptitude for seeing the underlying mathematical structure in almost everything, Caviness
has collaborated with departmental research projects during his tenure at Southern. In 2007 he
launched a research agenda of his own with the goal of developing frameworks in Mathematica (an
industry-standard computational tool) that can enhance its ability to solve scientific problems, and
has authored sixteen peer-reviewed publications in this area. The Mathematica community recognized
the significance of his work and accepted his application to attend the prestigious Wolfram NKS
Summer School in Italy during the summer of 2009. More recently he was invited to contribute a
series of articles to The Mathematica Journal. He is currently mentoring two students with the goal
of publishing their work.
Caviness has also made a significant contribution to broadening and enriching our understanding
of the role of faith in science. For years, he has used the Issues in Physical Science and Religion course
to help students gain a better understanding of their own world views and how scientific methods and
knowledge can complement their understanding of God. He has given lectures on the topic at sister
institutions in the United States, Europe, and South America.
It is a high honor for Southern Adventist University to present the President’s Award for
Excellence in Scholarship to Ken Caviness, which includes an honorarium of $500.
The President’s Award for Commitment to Student Success is given to an employee who demonstrates
a consistent philosophy of engaging students and building community.
One student describes Lisa Goolsby as “always going the extra mile for her students . . . a great
teacher . . . who has real world business experiences and applies them to our classes”. . . and who “goes
out of her way to help set up internships for her students.” Her dedication and care for her students
is described as “inspirational.” Another student writes that Goolsby is an “amazing teacher who uses
fun and engaging activities in the classroom. . . and takes time to plan interesting and educational
trips for the marketing club.”
Goolsby’s desire to expose students to real-life marketing experiences led her to start the Market
Research Institute thereby enabling students to gain discipline-specific work experience while attending
Southern. Projects undertaken by the Market Research Institute include the makeover at the Village
Market and much more recently the promotion of Southern Adventist University’s Quality Enhancement
Plan, praised by the accreditors as being groundbreaking.
Perhaps the highest tribute given by a student is that God definitely placed Goolsby as another
angel to guide university life.
Because of her engagement in the ministry of education within her field, and because of her
exemplary dedication to her students, Southern Adventist University is pleased to award Lisa Goolsby
the President’s Award for Commitment to Student Success, which includes an honorarium of $500.

The mace is a traditional symbol used to communicate and designate authority. The Southern
Adventist University mace was crafted in 1986 by John Durichek, a Southern alum. Southern’s
mace represents its heritage and raison d’être. The base is of pine from Jones Hall, built in 1917
and razed in 1985. The main staff is of walnut. The seven rings represent completeness. The
four-sided segment is seen as Southern’s underlying educational philosophy—balanced mental,
spiritual, physical, and social development for each student. Bearing the mace is the grand marshal,
Joe Mocnik, chair of the University Senate and Director of Libraries. His regalia is evergreen, the
university’s traditional color.
