Whether at the dealerships or through independent specialty-equipment 

installers, car and truck personalization allows consumers to tailor 

their vehicles to their unique requirements. While market forces—both 

intrinsic and external—have wrought changes over the past few years, 

consumers have never ceased to customize and care for their vehicles. 

As with other market segments, restyling 

customers have increasingly turned to 

the Internet to research available products 

and the companies that provide installation 

services. This surge in electronic 

communications provides unprecedented 

opportunities, so restylers have joined other 

specialty-equipment businesses in educating 

themselves about website design and tracking, 

social media, smartphone technology 

and other emergent marketing channels.

The restyling industry 

is facing a rapidly 

changing marketplace 

due to powerful factors: 

globalization, 

eCommerce, rising 

fuel costs, inflation and 

general unpredictability in today’s world. 

The new economic paradigm requires 

that business owners adapt quickly to 

change and be open to opportunities. 

Function over fashion is the most 

significant trend in the restyling segment. 

Products with true functionality 

have vastly outpaced counterparts that 

are only visual in nature. Quite simply, 

consumer discretionary income is tighter 

than ever, and products that combine 

function and fashion are doing best. 

Consumers are looking for items that 

provide comfort, safety and performance

key attributes coupled with continual 

innovation and improvement will drive 

increased demand. 

That being said, the cost of fuel is 

the throttle on the entire economy and 

affects everything from tomatoes to tonneau 

covers. Price any item in the local 

grocery, and you’ll see the uptick; the 

increases are small but will be painful 

over time. Without a real focus on U.S. 

energy policy, fuel costs will have a major 

impact on the entire economy. Our 

industry will be no exception.

What you’ve been doing for the past 25 

years won’t guarantee you a future, so be 

willing to learn technology integration. 

When the banks did their correction 

to lending policies in 2008–2009, it 

left consumers hungry for amenities, 

such as electronics and leather. After the 

realignment, some car buyers couldn’t 

get approved for higher-priced vehicles. 

Nicer amenities became a natural addition 

for these types of buyers. 

Leather continues to be at the top of 

the most-requested products for interiors. 

Consumers hunger for color selections 

other than what the factory offers. 

They’re also interested in navigation, 

backup-assist products and hands-free 

management systems. 

The most significant products for our 

company continue to be sunroofs, but 

we’ve also added graphics and a clear bra 

product to our lines. Retro-looking cars 

lend themselves to racing stripes more 

now than ever before. 

The vehicle mix has also changed. In 

past years, dealerships sold five new cars 

for every one used car; now the ratio 

has changed to one used for every one 

new. For that reason, restylers selling 

to car dealerships should target the preowned 

lots.

marketing strategies because what is hot 

will always change, and marketing tools 

are changing faster than most of us can 

keep up with. 

The lines between truck accessories 

and restyling have become blurred, and 

the OEMs are becoming more aggressive 

with factory packages. Even so, there is 

a larger need for aftermarket accessories. 

With the OEMs getting so deeply into 

the electronics category, I see leather as 

the biggest interior trend and graphics 

and trim for exterior packages. 

The most obvious hurdles for the 

industry are gas prices and the recovering 

economy. More specific to our segment 

is the reluctance of some companies to 

spend money on marketing and inventory, 

even though those two things fuel 

sales in aftermarket accessories and are 

crucial to our industry’s growth. 

Opportunity hides around every corner. 

Inner-city restylers may find it in 

trim and graphics or with hybrids, while 

restylers in rural areas may find it in taking 

advantage of great deals on trucks. In 

a recovering market, you truly have to 

look for your opportunities—but they’re 

out there.

It’s critically important to stay abreast 

of industry trends and to be open to and 

embrace change. The industry is constantly 

evolving, so restylers should be prepared to 

expand their horizons, master new skills, 

guard against using price cutting as a marketing 

tool and instead position themselves 

as professionals whose skills and know-how 

are a value-add to their customers, whether 

they’re car dealers or consumers. 

Look for new opportunities that can 

help to increase your market share, be it 

mining the used-vehicle market, expanding 

from a car-centric focus to include more 

crossovers and SUVs or creating a website. 

Rather than lamenting that some products 

may no longer be best sellers or worrying 

about what the competition is doing, focus 

on the positive.

in our industry are due 

to outside forces, such 

as high gas prices. The

companies that are targeting vehicles

Downsizing your vehicle does not 

mean downsizing your desire for aftermarket

Today’s consumers are looking to differentiate 

their vehicles from others by

adding seat heaters and seat massagers to 

provide driving enjoyment. In addition,

DVDs and overhead DVD players are 

very popular. 

The best part of our industry is that 

new opportunities, products and hot 

vehicles are here today or are just around 

the corner. I can think of no better 

way to stay on top of the trends than 

by joining SEMA and the Professional 

Restylers Organization (PRO) council. 

Get involved in the industry and obtain 

the necessary sales and technical training 

that is offered through both groups. 

Come to the SEMA Show in November 

and attend the many seminars to get new 

ideas and see products that you can use

things. We weren’t seeing 

that last year. 

We founded our business on sunroofs, 

and they’ve become one of our strongest 

growth segments again. Ground effects 

are also making a comeback, particularly 

with the Camaro and the Mustang, and 

electronics are still doing well. Video is 

a good segment for us, and we’re also 

doing a lot of cruise control. OE-style 

navigation hasn’t happened yet for us, 

though. The problem with nav units is 

that if they look like OE, the customer 

wants them to function like OE, and 

we’re just not to that point yet. 

I think that the next two or three years 

are going to be an important time for 

our industry. The car manufacturers are 

really trying to keep any additional work 

close to their vests. We need to keep the 

pressure on to make them understand 

that we have high standards for our 

products. We need to focus on how we 

take care of the customer, and we have 

to sell service.

sales. They’re forced

industry, which is 

causing increases in the price of used 

vehicles. We have an opportunity to capitalize 

on that trend by installing leather 

in used vehicles to make them look new, 

but the banks will loan only so much for 

each car based on National Automobile 

Dealers Association’s (NADA’s) and Kelley 

Blue Book’s estimated values. While 

we do patterns for almost every vehicle, 

it’s still a matter of whether we’re able to 

include a leather package in the financing 

of the car. 

We have customers who package our 

leather with other products. Sunroofs, 

leather and seat heaters always complement 

each other, and we rep Webasto 

sunroofs. When the manufacturers build 

luxury cars, they always package those 

products into them. That gives us an 

opportunity to package them in the 

lower lines. 

Of all the trends, though, safety is 

probably going to be in the forefront of 

everything. Safety sensors are constantly 

evolving, and we spend a tremendous 

amount to make sure that our products 

don’t hinder the operation of those systems.
