2.7 There were 6 bank robbery cases in 2009, compared with 10 in 2008.<br />

Most cases in 2009 occurred in the first half of the year. There were 2 cases of<br />

goldsmith/watch shop robbery in 2009, compared with 5 cases in 2008.<br />

Statistics on bank and goldsmith/watch shop robberies from 2000 to 2009 are at<br />

Appendix H.<br />

Burglary<br />

2.8 There were 4 489 burglaries in 2009, representing a drop of 6.0%<br />

compared with 4 774 in 2008 (see chart at Appendix I).<br />

Homicide<br />

2.9 There were 47 homicide cases in 2009, compared with 36 in 2008<br />

(see chart at Appendix J). 9 cases (19.1%) reported in 2009 were related to<br />

domestic violence, compared with 8 (22.2%) in 2008.<br />

Wounding and Serious Assault<br />

2.10 There were 7 688 wounding and serious assault cases in 2009, a drop<br />

of 2.5% compared with 7 882 in 2008 (see chart at Appendix K). 603 (7.8%)<br />

wounding and serious assault cases in 2009 were triad-related, compared with<br />

648 cases (8.2%) in 2008.<br />

Serious Narcotics Offences<br />

2.11 2 929 serious narcotics offences (e.g. trafficking in, manufacturing<br />

and possession of dangerous drugs) were reported in 2009, a decrease of 1.2%<br />

compared with 2 966 cases in 2008 (see chart at Appendix L). Altogether<br />

3 697 persons were arrested for serious narcotics offences in 2009, a decrease of<br />

0.6% compared with 3 718 in 2008. Of those arrested in 2009, 1 115 were<br />

juveniles and young persons aged under 21, representing a decrease of 3.3%<br />

from 1 153 persons in 2008, and 1 100 (98.7%) of them were arrested in<br />

connection with psychotropic drugs.<br />

Shop Theft<br />

2.12 10 733 cases of shop thefts were reported in 2009, an increase<br />

of 14.9% compared with 9 343 in 2008 (see chart at Appendix M). The value<br />

of the stolen property was $200 or below in 6 688 cases (62.3%).<br />
