Learning and Sports Village 

Since the first publication of our Community Link Magazine back 

in October 2013, there have been many changes at New College 

Leicester. Large sections of building have disappeared at both the 

North and South ends of the site as part of the BSF programme. 

In its place is a newly built South Entrance which is now visible 

from Glenfield Road. This new frontage to the college is an 

imposing entrance for visitors and gives a great first impression 

of our high performing school. 

The void left by the demolition of the building at the north part of the site is clear to be 

seen and proposals for development of this land are being considered. The college 

leadership is happy to consider educational or sport use of the land which would benefit 

the local community.

New College Leicester Learning & Sports Village

Alongside all of the structural work, the Principal and her team have been working 

tirelessly to continue to drive the college forward. An improvement in exam results in 

2014 was pleasing and a reward for all of the hard work put in by the students and the 

staff. 

Continuing to lead the way with sports development, the college and our partner sports 

clubs have had yet another successful year. A brand new state of the art sports hall 

floor system has been very well received by all of our customers and the improvements 

do not stop there. A proposal for a coffee shop is well underway and it is hoped that it 

will be available from early 2015. The community use of the college continues to grow 

and we have also been supporting Sport England nationally to create an effective web 

resource to help schools to open up their facilities effectively. 

The college is very much placing itself at the heart of the community and becoming 

a hub for education and sport. It is genuinely transforming the learning environment 

and developing specific and measurable outcomes for its students, the local community 

and the people of Leicester.

everyone who attends or visits New College Leicester. We hope that the community 

of New Parks and the City as a whole, appreciates the role we are trying to play, and

Partnership Development 

Team 

The Partnership Development team is responsible 

for setting up and monitoring a wide range of 

projects including Mentoring and Paired Reading 

at the college. 

The team runs a number of volunteering opportunities for the local 

community ranging from an hour a week on our paired reading project 

to classroom placements for one or two days. We have even had a successful placement 

in the New College science laboratories that have led to a volunteer receiving two job 

offers in a week! 

The team will discuss any ideas you may have to gain experience or simply want to 

volunteer at the college. 

We are particularly keen to develop our allotment project and are hoping to work more 

closely with various community projects. So if you are interested in helping us to run 

community allotment then contact any of the team. 

We continue to work with the Prince’s Trust and other organisations such as Telephonica 

and University of Leicester. Telephonica have been particularly supportive in this area. 

They have provided us with poly-tunnel, equipment and built our new Hen coup! We also 

have particularly strong links with the Square Mile Programme at De Montfort University. 

Undergraduates help us with both paired reading and mentoring projects. We also have 

undergraduates volunteering 

in classrooms and working 

alongside teachers to 

provide additional support 

to enhance the learning 

experiences of pupils at 

New College Leicester.

Leicester Forest 

Cycling Club 

Come and join a world leading sport! 

The Leicester Forest Cycling Club is one of the most respected 

clubs nationwide. Since it was created by a group of enthusiasts 

in 1923, it has always been a well organised, well structured 

and disciplined club. It is a friendly club who cover the whole 

spectrum of cycling. 

Our members actively take part, organise and promote time trials, road races, Audax, 

off-road and cyclo-cross events, sportives and social events. 

We have regular weekend club runs for all, including a “social” ride where the pace is 

gentle to encourage all to take up cycling. 

Since becoming a British Cycling Go-Ride 

club, we have established youth coaching 

for 5–16 year olds on a Tuesday evening at 

New College Leicester. Now starting our third 

year, numbers continue to grow, and we can 

now accommodate up to 75 children at our 

sessions. 

These sessions are aimed at giving 

youngsters an opportunity to learn some 

basic bike-handling skills at an early age, 

with an element of entry level racing and the 

emphasis on enjoyment.

Young Heroes 

Basketball Club 

Young Heroes is a basketball club for young people 

aged 8+. Head Coach for the club is Dave Harris, 

a former professional and international basketball 

player who played for several clubs including 

Leicester Riders, where he was also their 

Head Coach. 

Currently, Young Heroes has 4 youth teams competing in 

England Basketballs regional divisions, U14 / U15 / U16 

and U18, playing under the team name “Leicester 

Dynamite”. The club’s coaches are all at least Level 2 

qualified and are fully DBS checked. 

The majority of the teams home games are held at New 

College. Details of fixtures (venues and times) can be 

found on Basketball England’s website. 

This year the numbers of club members in each age 

category has increased; supporting the theory that the 

sport is increasingly popular with young people. Young 

Heroes supports players from all ages, with our youngest 

members enjoying a Saturday morning session (when 

fixtures and court availability allow) from 10 am to 

12 noon. These sessions started off by attracting 

between 5–7 young people from the local community, 

however we now regularly see 15–20 youngsters at 

these sessions and we would welcome any young 

person wishing to join us. 

Our coach at these sessions; Hilroy Thomas has 

received much praise from local parents, who 

appreciate his enthusiasm and energy at the sessions. 

Many parents often stay to watch the session as they 

enjoy it so much! We hope that these young players 

will join our future National League teams.

Dodgeball 

We continue to be a key event centre for the UK 

Dodgeball Association. With our new state of the art 

sport flooring system complete with 2 permanent 

dodgeball courts the relationship and the partnership 

goes from strength to strength. 

Building on the huge success of the events 

last year we are pleased to announce that 

UK Dodgeball Association have booked an 

additional 10 events for 2014–2015. 

Alongside the events and competition the 

Governing Body are working hard to grow 

the workforce and we proudly hosted a 

Dodgeball Level 2 qualification last year 

for the Governing Body which attracted 

40 delegates to New College Leicester.

Allexton and New Parks 

Football Club 

Allexton and New Parks Football Club are one of the 

largest junior football clubs in Leicestershire with a past 

of high achievement and a future that promises to take that 

achievement to a new level. 

We have tremendous facilities, amongst the best in the County, and we feel it is an 

excellent place and environment for young people to play football. 

2013–2014 was yet again another 

successful year for the club both on 

and off the field. Increased club 

membership and success at senior 

and junior level continue to prove 

that the club are doing things in the 

right way. 

The aims and objectives of the 

committee and the executive remain 

to provide an organised programme 

of recreational football for the young 

people in the area, aged 5 years 

and above. Through these 

opportunities the club endeavour to 

develop young people's physical, 

mental and spiritual well-being, so as 

to encourage their growth into mature, 

responsible and valued members of 

society. The club forward to 

continuing to work with colleagues 

at New College Leicester to drive 

forward the great work in 2014–2015 

in line with the strategy and all the 

other sporting partner.

Leicester Riders 

Basketball Club 

The Leicester Riders Basketball Club in partnership 

with Leicestershire Police and New College 

Leicester deliver the community outreach 

programme Shoot 2 the Future at the school on 

a Friday night 7–9pm. 

The project aims to offer a positive 

activity for young people on a Friday 

evening in a safe environment. The 

partnership with New College 

Leicester has enabled the session 

to be delivered in facilities which 

are safe and high in quality. The 

sessions are delivered by a qualified 

Leicester Riders Community Coach 

along with a professional Leicester 

Riders player. 

The session adopts a turn up and 

play format with no cost to the 

players and the chance for players 

to have an input on what type of 

skills/games they would like 

delivered. 

Along with a community session, 

New College Leicester and Leicester 

Riders offer their students the 

opportunity to attend an afterschool 

club on Wednesdays between 

3.15–4.15pm delivered by the 

Leicester Riders. The afterschool 

club gives the students of New 

College Leicester the chance to 

develop their interest in sport whilst working alongside expert coaches.

Leicester City 

Football Club 

In partnership with New College Leicester and the 

Leicester and District Football Association, Leicester 

City Football Club have been supporting the developments 

of Primary Schools Football across Leicester. 

Building on some solid foundations, the Primary Schools Football League has grown 

from 24 schools competing, to a huge 55 schools participating this academic year. 

The formula for this success has been the expertise that the coaches bring in terms of 

the organisation and the quality of the venues. With so much investment in artificial 

pitches in Leicester, it seemed sensible to run central leagues at 4 venues across the 

city, giving all Primary Schools the ability to attend with limited travelling. Judgemeadow, 

Soar Valley, New College Leicester and Aylestone Leisure Centre are the venues where 

all the action takes place. 

Building on this interest, pathways 

have been created to see for the 

first time a City under 11s District 

side come together to play against 

other areas of the country. Linked 

to this, LCFC run Satellite sessions 

at venues across the City which 

can be attended by youngsters 

who would like to benefit from 

some expertise coaching. 

The Satellite Centre at New College 

Leicester is on Fridays and for 

7–11 year olds. 

Cost is £18 for 6 sessions.

First Aid at New College 

New College Leicester has recently developed 

a partnership arrangement with Sapphire First 

Aid to provide training courses. We are also able 

to provide quality First Aid cover for events taking 

place at the college. 

In the last 12 months there have been 14 

courses run, from Paediatric to Full First Aid 

at Work with excellent feedback about the 

quality of the training. Next year the list of 

courses is set to increase in size and content. 

In 2015 we will be offering: 

l First Aid at Work (Level 3) 

l First Aid at Work Requalification (Level 3) 

l Paediatric First Aid (Level 3) 

l Emergency First Aid at Work (Level 2) 

l Paediatric Emergency First Aid (Level 2) 

l CPR & AED (Defibrillation) (Level 2) 

In addition to this, we can cater for shorter, 

more basic courses which can be designed 

to suit your individual needs such as D of E 

and first aid for new parents. Additionally, 

we are able to provide EVAC Chair training, 

Epi-pen training and Epilepsy Awareness 

courses. All training takes place at 

New College Leicester.
