40 bacteriological laboratories were certified during the fiscal year. In FY2011, there was one
new certified bacteriological laboratory. The certified bacteriological laboratories consisted of
two State Health Department laboratories, 27 water system laboratories, nine commercial
laboratories, one county laboratory, and one state college laboratory.
36 (17 in-state and 19 out-of-state) chemical laboratories were certified during the fiscal year.
Two new out-of-state chemical laboratories and three new in-state laboratories were certified by
in FY2011. One in-state chemical laboratory closed down and seven out-of-state laboratories
chose not to renew their certification in FY2011. Appendices E and F contain a list of certified
chemical and bacteriological laboratories.
The Department allowed certified chemical laboratories to choose their own supplier of
performance evaluation (PE) samples. Laboratories are allowed one retest for any contaminant
they failed during the first PE study.
EPA conducted an onsite audit of the laboratory certification program during FY2011. The audit
findings led the Department to greatly enlarge and expand its coordination meetings with the
Health Department. In addition, the Department developed a written program plan and revised
its standard operating procedures.

been submitted to the SRF & Surface Water Grants Section of EPA Region IV under separate
cover.
Operator Certification Program
The FY2011 Alabama Operator Certification Annual Report is incorporated by reference and has
been submitted to the EPA Region IV Operator Certification Coordinator under separate cover.
