meet humboldt Daniel Hernandez (‘10) of Downey, Calif., is majoring in environmental science with a minor in scientific diving. He just finished a coveted summer internship at the Joint Institute for the Study of Atmosphere and Ocean in Seattle. He is also a recipient of a Montgomery Scholarship, which was set up by retired judge Thomas Montgomery and his wife, Doris, to support a wide range of students, including those with financial need or a commitment to community service. Landing that Internship “I think I was able to land my NOAA internship because in my statement I mentioned taking my undergrad work to the graduate level – fusing in-class preparation with the outside world. You’re not just envisioning yourself out there, you’re actually putting to use what you’re learning.” Trying Something Different “For college, I really wanted to venture beyond my home, something distinct and different. But I knew I would stay coastal.” Graduating from College “I am definitely a product of a stable home, but neither of my parents went to college. I think it’s inspiring to them to see how they could quite possibly have four kids who may graduate from college.” It All Adds Up “After making sure I had enough to cover tuition and books, I used the scholarship funds to replace some of my scuba gear for a semester of rescue diving and underwater photography.” My Mentor “My biggest mentor on this campus is Dr. Jacqueline Bolman. Without her, I wouldn’t have even felt confident enough to apply for some of these scholarships, these internships. I’ve reaped the benefits of having someone there to say, ‘You know what You may feel like the underdog, you may not feel confident, but apply.’” meet more humboldt students humboldt.edu/meet
