CAMPUS EVENT FEATURES REDWOOD EXPERTS<br />

On Oct. 3, <strong>Humboldt</strong> <strong>State</strong> will host a special series of talks by key<br />

participants in National Geographic’s redwoods cover story and others.<br />

Speakers will include:<br />

Steve Sillett | HSU professor and the Kenneth L. Fisher Chair in<br />

Redwood Ecology<br />

Nick Nichols | a National Geographic wildlife photographer<br />

Michael Fay | National Geographic explorer-in-residence and<br />

conservationist with the Wildlife Conservation Society<br />

Ruskin Hartley | Executive Director of Save the Redwoods League.<br />

of data collection near the treetop and then work their way down. Sillett sets up a robot called a Gigapan, which takes hundreds of photos along<br />

a regular grid that can then be digitally stitched together to create a highly detailed composite image. Hardhats, harnesses and climbing rope<br />

are part of the standard equipment for climbing redwoods safely.<br />
