BLUE DRAGON HEAD COACH RION RHOADES
As a Blue Dragon player in the mid-1990s, Rion Rhoades was a
tough, aggressive, intense linebacker. He brings those same qualities
as the fourth-year head coach of the Hutchinson Community
College football team.
Named the program’s 17th head coach on December 12, 2006,
Rhoades was a part of HCC’s 1993 and 1994 teams under coaches
Sam Pittman and Andy Hill. Those teams put down the foundation
for the 1995 Blue Dragons that won the team’s last Jayhawk
Conference championship.
Now 13 years into his coaching career, Rhoades is working on
rebuilding the Blue Dragons back to that level. Rhoades is 25-16 at Hutchinson. He has
led HCC to back-to-back 7-4 seasons. In 2008, Hutchinson made its first berth in the
Region VI championship game since 1995. Last season, the Blue Dragons culminated
the season with a 22-14 victory over New Mexico Military in the Salt City Bowl. The
2008 Blue Dragons finished 19th in the final NJCAA poll. They were 13th to finish last
season.
Rhoades is 32-21 overall in five years as a collegiate head coach. Rhoades came to
HCC after guiding Fort Scott Community College to a remarkable one-year turnaround.
Rhoades still has the distinction of being the Blue Dragons’ third all-time leading
tackler with 268 stops.
BLUE DRAGONS’ POSTSEASON HISTORY
This will be the 36th Region VI/Jayhawk Conference playoff game in Blue
Dragon postseason history. HCC has also appeared in 14 junior college bowl games.
HCC qualified for the four-team Region VI playoffs for the third-straight season.
The 2008 Region VI Playoffs were the first postseason games for HCC since 2005,
and the first since Region VI revamped its playoff format before the 2006 season.
Last season, HCC fell to eventual Region VI champion Fort Scott 42-17 in the
semifinals.
Hutchinson is 17-18 in postseason games not including bowl games.
Hutchinson is 13-0 in playoff games at Gowans Stadium and 4-16 on the road and
0-1 on neutral fields.
HCC went 11-3 in the quarterfinals before that round was dropped after 2005. The
Dragons are 5-12 in semifinal games after last week’s 24-17 win over Independence.
The Blue Dragons made their first title game appearance since 1995 in 2008 in a
29-14 loss to eventual national champion Butler. It’s was their fourth overall - HCC
is 1-3 in Region VI championship games - also appearing in 1982, 1994 and 1995.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP POSSIBILITIES
The Blue Dragons’ road to a possible shot at a national title is twisted, but it obviously
starts with defeating the Grizzlies for the first time since 1997.
In addition to that happening, Trinity Valley must upset No. 2 Navarro College on
Sunday.
No. 4 Western Arizona defeated Scottsdale 34-17 on Saturday. The Dragons must
hope a victory over Butler might sway enough voters to move HCC past Arizona
Western in the final regular-season poll that will be released on Tuesday.

2010 START IS FOURTH BEST
IN BLUE DRAGON HISTORY
HCC’s 28-0 loss to top-ranked Butler on
Oct. 23 snapped the fourth-best start in program
history, which dates back to 1928.
The Blue Dragons started 7-0 start for the
first time since 1969.
Only the 1969, 1948 and 1947 Blue Dragon
teams have had better starts, all three starting their seasons 10-0.
BLUE DRAGONS IN THE NJCAA NATIONAL POLL
HCC’s 24-17 victory over Independence combined with losses by Iowa Western and
Mississippi Gulf Coast meant the Blue Dragons returned in the NJCAA Top 5, coming
in at No. 5 in the latest national rankings.
The Blue Dragons have been ranked in the NJCAA Top 10 for 10 consecutive weeks.
Only twice between 1970 and this season have
the Blue Dragons achieved a Top 5 national football
ranking. In 1996, HCC was ranked as high as
No. 4 and last season the Blue Dragons climbed
to No. 4 before ultimately finishing at No. 13.
The No. 2 ranking - HCC’s high water mark
in 2010 - is the highest NJCAA ranking, it’s not
the highest football ranking in Blue Dragon history.
JC Gridwire had Hutchinson ranked No. 1
in the nation for one week in 1996.
This is the second-straight season that HCC
started a season as a nationally ranked football
team. Last season HCC opened the year ranked
with a 22-14 victory over New Mexico Military in the Salt City Bowl and finished
ranked 13th in the nation with a 7-4 record.
With this week’s ranking, the Blue Dragons have now been ranked in 15 consecutive
and 23 of the last 25 NJCAA football polls, the longest run as a ranked team since the
mid-1990s, when it spent time in 29 consecutive polls.
RECORD VS. RANKED FOES TURNING AROUND UNDER RHOADES
Before Rion Rhoades came to HCC in 2007, wins against ranked opponents were
rare for Blue Dragon Football.
Between 2000 and 2006, the Blue Dragons were 1-22 against nationally ranked
competition. Under Rhoades, HCC has improved to 4-10 against ranked opponents
after a 41-0 victory over No. 14 Coffeyville on Oct. 30 at Gowans Stadium.
HCC upset No. 6 Coffeyville 21-17 in 1999. That turned out to be the last win over a
ranked team until the 2004 Blue Dragons upended No. 9 Tyler Junior College 15-10 in the
2004 Heart of Texas Bowl, which snapped a 16-game losing streak vs. ranked opponents.
Following the bowl win, HCC again lost 12 straight to ranked teams to close out a
1-28 stretch vs. ranked opponents until a 17-0 victory at No. 19 Garden City in the
2008 regular-season finale snapped that skid.
That was also HCC’s first true road victory over a ranked team since the 1995
Jayhawk Conference championship game, a 39-25 win over Garden City.
Following the 2008 win over Garden City, the Blue Dragons knocked off No. 9
Fort Scott 30-17. Last season, HCC defeated No. 16 New Mexico Military 22-14 in
the Salt City Bowl.
HCC COMES FROM BEHIND TO WIN SEMIFINAL VS. INDEPENDENCE
The Blue Dragons rallied from a 10-point third-quarter deficit with 17 unanswered
points to defeat upstart Independence 24-17 last Sunday in the semifinals of the 2010
Region VI playoffs at Gowans Stadium.
HCC improved to 13-0 all-time in postseason games at Gowans Stadium.
The Blue Dragons trailed Independence – a team HCC defeated 55-26 on Sept. 4
at Independence – 10-7 at halftime. The situation looked even bleaker after Lavelle
Maddox gashed the Dragon defense up the middle for a 73-yard touchdown on the
second play of the second half to give the Pirates a 17-7 lead with 14:10 to play in
the third quarter.
Hutchinson answered by scoring on three of its next four possessions, taking the
lead on Derek Campbell’s 1-yard touchdown run with 3:06 remaining in the fourth
quarter that capped a 16-play, 80-yard drive.
HCC had trouble getting its own running game started, rushing for a negative-two
yards in the opening quarter. HCC finally got it cranked up with Campbell and Angelo
Pease carrying the load. The Dragons rushed for 116 yards in the fourth quarter alone
and finished with 183 yards for the game on 53 carries. The Dragons had 397 total
yards and possessed the ball for 33 minutes, 27 seconds. HCC had one turnover.
Campbell rushed for a team-high 86 yards on 18 carries with one touchdown.
Pease finished with 23 carries and 56 yards.
Freshman quarterback Elliott Alford completed 12 of 20 passes for 214 yards and
two touchdowns and he ran for 43 yards on 10 carries. Cordarrelle Patterson caught
five passes for 101 yards and a 70-yard touchdown. Sophomore John Miller caught
three passes for 77 yards and a 47-yard score.
Independence had two runners surpass the 100-yard mark. Quarterback Brodrick
Waters rushed for 109 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Stephen Houston went
over the 1,000-yard mark for the season and finished with 104 yards on 12 carries.
Maddox finished with 79 yards on just three carries.
The Pirates had 338 rushing yards. Waters was 3 of 10 passing for 21 yards and
was sacked once. The Pirates turned the ball over two times.
SCOUTING THE GRIZZLIES
Butler was hands down the team of the last decade in the Jayhawk Conference with
three national championships. Last season, Fort Scott stopped Butler’s run of conference
and regional crowns, but the Grizzlies have returned with a vengeance this season,
winning its first 10 games by an average of 29.1 points per game.
Butler has one of the nation’s top passers in Butler quarterback Zach Mettenberger, a
University of Georgia transfer. Mettenberger is seventh in the NJCAA in passing, completing
56 percent of his passes for 2,130 yards per game with 25 touchdown passes to
only three interceptions.
BLUE DRAGONS ON THE WAY
TO SHATTERING SCORING MARK
With a team record of six games of scoring
40 or more points, the 2010 Blue Dragon
offense is on its way to setting a new team
scoring record.
The Blue Dragons are averaging 38.0 points
per game in 2010. That’s 2.5 points better than
the 2009 Blue Dragons’ team record of 35.5
points per game.
HCC has scored 380 points through 10
games. That ranks fifth on the all-time Blue
Dragon points list. The 1949 Blue Dragons in 12 games scored 363 points.
DE WILLIAMS JOINS CAREER TOP 5
QUARTERBACK SACKS LIST
All-Jayhawk defensive end Meshak Williams
is picking up right where he left off as a freshman
- chasing quarterbacks.
The 6-3, 235-pound defensive end from
Sylvester, GA is the only starter returning on the
defensive line in 2010.
With his lone sack against Kilgore in Week 1, Williams joined the career Top 10 in
quarterback sacks. With his two sacks against Garden City last week, Williams is fourth
with 19 sacks. He is only four sacks from No. 2 on the career list.
Williams was third in total tackles in 2009 with 61 stops, including team highs of 25.5
tackles for loss and 11.5 quarterback sacks. Williams also had nine quarterback hurries
and four forced fumbles.
His 11.5 quarterback sacks tied for ninth on the Blue Dragon single-season list and
10th on the career list.
PEASE REACHES CAREER TOP 10 FOR TOTAL OFFENSE
Angelo Pease is a luxury that the Blue Dragons haven’t had since record-setting
quarterback Robert Coates played at Gowans Stadium in 2003 and 2004.
Pease, a duel-threat quarterback from Cairo, GA, returns to start at quarterback
PATTERSON IS NATIONAL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
FOR SECOND TIME THIS SEASON
HCC freshman receiver/kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson was named the
NJCAA’s National Football Special Teams Player of the Week
twice this season.
Patterson, a 6-foot-7, 197-pound freshman from Rock Hill, S.C.,
ran a kickoff back 91 yards for a touchdown to start the second
half in HCC’s 41-0 victory over No. 14 Coffeyville last weekend.
It was his second kickoff return for a TD this season.
Patterson also earned national special teams honors on Sept. 14
after a school-record-tying 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown
in the No. 6 Blue Dragons’ 45-3 victory over Air Force Prep at
Gowans Stadium.
The kickoff return proved to be a major factor in the game. Prep Patterson
had just kicked a long field goal to pull within 7-3 late in the first
quarter and Patterson took the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a momentum-changing
touchdown that tied the school record of Dan Bythwood, who did it against Highland
in 1999.

DRAGONS MAKE GOWANS TOUGH PLACE FOR OPPOSING TEAMS
Over the years, Gowans Stadium has been a pretty good home for HCC.
Built in 1940, HCC surpassed 200 wins at Gowans with a 45-13 win over
Coffeyville in 2008. HCC is 210-105-8 at Gowans and 245-116-14 at home all-time.
This season marks the fifth year of the renovated Gowans Stadium. At an overall cost
of $5.5 million, Gowans Stadium received a major face lift that included a new FieldTurf
playing surface, new drainage system, track, press box and many other features, now
including the DragonVision video board. Gowans now has a capacity of 5,500.
BLUE DRAGONS REACH PROGRAM WIN NO. 400 IN 2008
In its 79th season of existence, the Blue Dragon football program reached the 400-
victory plateau in a 45-13 victory over Coffeyville on Oct. 11, 2008 at Gowans Stadium.
Entering play in the 2010 season, the Blue Dragons are 420-311-28. The Blue
Dragons have posted 51 winning seasons in team history.
WORTH NOTING
+ This season’s game with Kilgore was only the seventh time HCC has played a
team from Texas. HCC has played only Tyler Junior College (1-4) and Kilgore (1-1)
from the Lone Star State in program history.
+ The Blue Dragons have won two straight bowl games - the 2009 Salt City Bowl
and the 2004 Heart of Texas Bowl - for the first time in program history.
+ Shaun Hill (1998-99) is the only former Blue Dragon currently in the NFL. He
was traded this summer from San Francisco to the Detroit Lions.
+ Former Blue Dragon All-Conference running back Arland Bruce continues to
excel in the Canadian Football League. Playing for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Bruce
earlier this season tied a CFL single-game record with 16 receptions and posted the
fifth-most receiving yardage in CFL history with 261 yards.
+ Former Blue Dragon assistant coach Jeff Leiker is part of the 2010 NJCAA
Football Hall of Fame Induction Class. Leiker was an assistant coach at HCC under
Tim Saia in the mid-1980s. Leiker went on to coach at Garden City, Fort Hays State
and Coffeyville to earn his Hall of Fame credentials.
+ Freshman defensive back Darren Myles is a transfer from the University of
Tennessee. Myles was rated the No. 9 safety and the No. 133 overall prospect in the
nation by Rivals.com Myles was selected to play in the Under Armour All-America
game.
