PROGRAMME; Graham Wilson introduced Club member John Hannah,
Project Manager for the rebuild of Ferrymead Bridge who
presented an excellent illustrated address on the history
and construction details of this ‘lifeline’ project.
The first bridge was constructed in 1864 giving an
alternative to the ferry and was a central swing structure.
A toll charge applied and in 1888 tram-lines were added
for the Sumner service.
This bridge was replaced in 1907 with a new bridge with a
central lift section. The lift mechanism failed on opening
day and was never used.
The third bridge was built in 1967. It was a concrete
structure and was being widened and strengthened at the
time of the earthquakes. It is classified as a lifeline bridge because of its
importance in carrying all infrastructure as well as traffic. It did not collapse in
the earthquakes but suffered significant damage as John’s photos showed
and the decision was made to build a new bridge estimated to cost $20M.
It is a difficult site as there is 20 metres of estuarine mud over fractured
volcanic rock. This means that the 2.4m diameter piles in the central pier
have to be 28metres long and driving these is a slow process. The piling
alone is costing $7-8M. The pre-cast beams are 26 metres in length.
Completion is expected in July 2015.
The old bridge is almost demolished and temporary bridges on each side are
now in use.
