Corning Surfaces 

Corning offers a variety of modified 

polystyrene surfaces for the binding 

or covalent immobilisation of cells, 

proteins, nucleic acids, and other 

types of biomolecules 

Untreated Surface 

Untreated surfaces are ideal for growing cells in 

stationary suspension or other applications where 

reduced cell attachment is desired. Natural, 

unmodified polystyrene surfaces are hydrophobic and 

only bind cells and biomolecules through passive 

hydrophobic interactions 

Untreated polystyrene vessels are often chosen for 

growing embryoid bodies and other cells where cell 

attachment needs to be reduced or avoided 

(suspension culture) 

CellBIND ® Surface 

Corning ® CellBIND ® surface improves cell attachment 

by incorporating significantly more oxygen into the 

cell culture surface, rendering it it more hydrophilic 

and increasing surface stability 

Enhances cell attachment under difficult conditions, 

such as reduced-serum or serum-free medium 

resulting in higher yields 

Requires no refrigeration or special handling and is 

stable at room temperature 

More consistent and even cell attachment

PDL (molecular weight range of 70 to 150 kDa). 

This synthetic polymeric coating creates a 

uniform net positive charge on the plastic 

surface which, for some cell types, can enhance 

cell attachment, growth and differentiation, 

especially in serum-free and low serum 

conditions 

PDL surfaces often improve attachment and 

growth of primary neurons, glial cells, 

neuroblastomas, and a variety of transfected cell
