occult supply <strong>and</strong> bookstore <strong>of</strong> her own, <strong>and</strong><br />

started a periodical, the Psychic St<strong>and</strong>ard, which<br />

was not Satanist in content. The periodical was<br />

published until 1980, Paglini moved away, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

church is now defunct.<br />

Thee Satanic Orthodox Church <strong>of</strong> Nethilum<br />

Rite emerged into public view in 1971. Under<br />

the leadership <strong>of</strong> its high priest, Tery Taylor, <strong>and</strong><br />

headquartered at Chicago’s Occult Book Shop,<br />

the group staunchly opposed <strong>An</strong>ton LaVey <strong>and</strong><br />

his Church <strong>of</strong> Satan. The church taught an<br />

unusually traditional viewpoint that God<br />

created the universe, including Satan. The goal<br />

<strong>of</strong> church members was the acquisition <strong>of</strong> the<br />

power <strong>of</strong> Satan by means <strong>of</strong> rituals, psychic<br />

development, <strong>and</strong> the ministrations <strong>of</strong> elders.<br />

The group never had centers outside <strong>of</strong> Chicago,<br />

<strong>and</strong> claims to have over 500 members by 1973. It<br />

is now defunct.<br />

To the Devil, A Daughter<br />

This 1976 Hammer Studios film adaptation <strong>of</strong><br />

Dennis Wheatley’s novel, To the Devil, A Daughter,<br />

naturally features a Satanist devil-worshiping cult.<br />

The plot involves an occult writer who infiltrates<br />

the cult in order to save a young woman from a<br />

Rosemary’s Baby-type fate.<br />

Torment <strong>of</strong> the Damned<br />

Part <strong>of</strong> the popular image <strong>of</strong> hell is that Satan’s<br />

hordes are employed in the ongoing task <strong>of</strong><br />

tormenting the damned in an atmosphere<br />

suggesting that hell is not unlike a giant blast<br />

furnace. This item <strong>of</strong> folklore is central to many<br />
