HOST PROGRAMS
The Rotary Club Host Project sponsors
ophthalmologists from developing nations
to come to the United States for a
two-week professional, educational, social
and cultural immersion, beginning
with the first week in the hosting Rotary
Club’s community and concluding with
the second week at the Academy’s Annual
Meeting. Five international ophthalmologists
participated in this program in
2004.
“ I’ve come to realize that there are many
patients we give up on when actually
something can be done if we tried a bit
harder, like corneal scars which I learnt
can be improved or even treated with
things like Amniotic Membranes. We
are now in the process of seeing how we
can start a tissue bank and start doing
this procedure, which didn’t appear difficult
to perform. It was really an eye
opener.”
“ The program was excellent. I use the 90
DS and 78 DS lens for all patients with
retinal problems, and also in the plastic
surgery specialty, in the malignant case, I
find some new methods.”
“ As it is, you are doing a great job not just
in the professional aspect but also in the
social aspect. The hosts were extremely
good people. It’s like you carried out interviews
and picked the best among all
the Americans! The program is a really
great idea and I hope many more people
will benefit from it like I did. And thanks
to [FAAO staff] who is one of the most
organized and patient people I’ve met in
my ‘short’ lifetime. Keep it up.”
