Dear Friends
In 2005 the Academy Foundation is celebrating its 25th anniversary. It is an ideal time for
fondly looking back and enthusiastically looking forward. Everyone who supports and
works on behalf of the Foundation’s mission is proud of what we’ve accomplished and
eager to achieve even more. We are 25 years young and still growing with your support!
On behalf of the Academy Foundation’s Board of Directors, Advisory Board, staff and
its over 7,500 volunteer ophthalmologists dedicated to serving their communities, we
thank you for your continuing commitment to our organization. It is your support and
participation that allows us to strive for greatness in our mission of preventing avoidable
blindness and severe visual impairment through education and public service.
In large part, we owe our success to the individuals and organizations who contributed a
record $3.9 million in support of our cause during the 2004/2005 year.
But the measure of our success is more than the dollars we’ve raised. It is also measured by
the impact we’ve had on advancing lifelong ophthalmic education and how we’ve impacted
the lives of those who look to us for help. By that standard we had a remarkable year.
Last year, thanks to your support we…
• Served more than 48,000 medically underserved people through our award-winning public
service program, EyeCare America.
• Educated 595,000 children and their families about the eye and vision through Museum of
Vision activities.
• Provided 246 training programs in developing countries with free ophthalmic education
materials.
• Funded the Academy’s efforts to:
- Develop 10 Education Resource Center Practice Emphasis Areas online.
- Publish a new Refractive Surgery BCSC section.
- Produce a new BCSC CD-ROM version.
Yet there is still work to be done. There are many challenges ahead. The Foundation’s
leadership, staff and volunteers are committed to continuing the impact of our organization
now and in the future. We hope that you will continue to be a part of our success during
what promises to be an even more rewarding and dynamic 25 years to come.
