Dear Friends
In 2005 the Academy Foundation is celebrating its 25th anniversary. It is an ideal time for
fondly looking back and enthusiastically looking forward. Everyone who supports and
works on behalf of the Foundation’s mission is proud of what we’ve accomplished and
eager to achieve even more. We are 25 years young and still growing with your support!
On behalf of the Academy Foundation’s Board of Directors, Advisory Board, staff and
its over 7,500 volunteer ophthalmologists dedicated to serving their communities, we
thank you for your continuing commitment to our organization. It is your support and
participation that allows us to strive for greatness in our mission of preventing avoidable
blindness and severe visual impairment through education and public service.
In large part, we owe our success to the individuals and organizations who contributed a
record $3.9 million in support of our cause during the 2004/2005 year.
But the measure of our success is more than the dollars we’ve raised. It is also measured by
the impact we’ve had on advancing lifelong ophthalmic education and how we’ve impacted
the lives of those who look to us for help. By that standard we had a remarkable year.
Last year, thanks to your support we…
• Served more than 48,000 medically underserved people through our award-winning public
service program, EyeCare America.
• Educated 595,000 children and their families about the eye and vision through Museum of
Vision activities.
• Provided 246 training programs in developing countries with free ophthalmic education
materials.
• Funded the Academy’s efforts to:
- Develop 10 Education Resource Center Practice Emphasis Areas online.
- Publish a new Refractive Surgery BCSC section.
- Produce a new BCSC CD-ROM version.
Yet there is still work to be done. There are many challenges ahead. The Foundation’s
leadership, staff and volunteers are committed to continuing the impact of our organization
now and in the future. We hope that you will continue to be a part of our success during
what promises to be an even more rewarding and dynamic 25 years to come.
Senior Ophthalmologist
Advocates Continuing Education
During the past two decades the urgent need for
organized ophthalmology to support the advocacy
of medical eye care on the state and federal levels
has used funds that might otherwise have been
earmarked for continuing education, which for
years has been the primary mission of the American Academy of
Ophthalmology. Advocacy has become a personal obligation of
every ophthalmologist concerned about the socio-economic and
political realities that face us.
To ensure that ophthalmologists can continue to provide patients
access to the highest quality of eye care, the Academy has sought
a method to better fulfill its educational mission. The Academy
Education Fund is intended to raise philanthropic support in order
to advance ophthalmic education.
The AAO must remain the most trusted, credible and relevant
source of ophthalmic knowledge for its members. Our generation
of senior ophthalmologists must help ensure that the present and
the future generations of Eye MD’s will continue to represent the
excellence for which the finest specialty in medicine is well known.
-DAVID W. PARKE, MD
OPHTHALMIC EDUCATION
Ophthalmic Education supports the
development of current and clinically
relevant educational materials such as
specialty clinical updates, Basic Clinical
Science Courses (BCSC’s) and an easy-touse,
ophthalmic knowledge base created
by the Academy. Through this support, eye
care doctors and professionals worldwide
can obtain the educational resources
necessary to improve eye care.
THE ACADEMY EDUCATION FUND
Knowledge of medical advances is a
crucial component in providing patients
with quality eye care. The Academy
Education Fund supports research and
development that expedites the transfer
of critical ophthalmic knowledge
and development of easy-to-use,
educational products and services for
ophthalmologists.
The Museum of Vision
Preserves A Doctor’s Oral History
Dr. Claes H. Dohlman (b.1922) has had a
long and varied career. In 1959 he founded
the Cornea Service at the Massachusetts
Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI). In 1974
he was appointed Chief at MEEI, Chair of
Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School
and Director of the Howe Laboratory.
Before he retired from these positions,
Dr. Dohlman personally trained over
145 clinical fellows. He is considered a
pioneer in the development of corneal
transplantation and today, Dr. Dohlman
still spends time seeing patients and
conducting research on the development of
keratoprosthesis.
In 2004, Dr. Jules Baum suggested
preserving the life of Dr. Dohlman through
an oral history. Through our combined
efforts the Academy Archives now has the
remarkable story of Dr. Dohlman’s life as
told in his own words.
Oral histories are just one of the ways
that the Museum of Vision is working to
preserve the history of ophthalmology and
celebrate its unique contributions to science
and health.
“Thank you very much for sending the [oral]
history of my dear friend and highly estimated
teacher in ophthalmology and corneal research,
Claes Dohlman. Together with the sensitive
questions of Jules Baum, it is a wonderful piece
of literature.”
-MARTIN REIM, MD
OPHTHALMIC HERITAGE
Ophthalmology and the Academy have
played important roles in the history of
medicine. The Foundation’s Museum of
Vision preserves this history and translates
it into an educational resource for use by
Academy members, medical historians,
researchers and the public as they seek to
understand ophthalmology’s contributions
to society and address similar challenges
today and in the future.
Last year, the Museum of Vision reached
more than 595,000 people through its
activities.
COLLECTION
Each year the museum acquires many
items for its collection, including artifacts,
archival materials and rare books. Each
donation helps to create an interesting
collection, but also one with a rich and
varied background.
HISTORY RESOURCE SERVICES
The museum’s history resource services
assist with a wide range of historical
research requests. Each year Academy
members and the general public take
advantage of the Museum of Vision’s
educational resources by directing specific
inquiries to staff, conducting on-site
historical research, and accessing photos.
EXHIBITS
Nearly 325,000 people toured the
museum’s exhibits this year including our
award- winning children’s exhibit entitled
Animal Eyes ® . Some of the exhibit venues in
2004 were our gallery at 655 Beach Street,
G. Wiz Museum, the Phoenix Zoo, and the
San Francisco International Airport.
EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
The museum introduced more than
270,000 people to the world of vision
through its educational resources available
to physicians, teachers, parents, and other
museums interested in teaching people
of all ages about the eye, vision, and the
history of eye care.
International Assistance Program
Makes a World of Difference
It is a fact that people in developing countries represent 90
percent of the world’s blind population and are 10 times more
likely to go blind than those in developed countries.
“ The set of materials that we received is
going to provide us with a better education
and improve the professional relations
of our clinic.”
RECIPIENT OF EDUCATIONAL
MATERIALS, MACEDONIA
The Foundation’s international assistance
program helps improve eye care in developing
nations by enhancing the education
and training of ophthalmologists in those
regions. To date, the Foundation has provided
over 700 training institutions with
free ophthalmic educational materials and
has assisted hundreds of ophthalmologists
to attend the Academy’s Annual Meeting,
where they benefit from instruction and
skills transfer courses.
Last year, the Foundation provided 246
ophthalmology-training programs and 221
residents with free ophthalmic educational
materials, assisted 43 guest ophthalmologists
to attend the Academy’s Annual Meeting,
and developed the EyeCare Volunteer
Registry (www.eyecarevolunteer.org), an
online program created to link ophthalmologists
to volunteer opportunities in developing
countries.
EDUCATION DISTRIBUTION
International Assistance provides muchneeded
educational materials to ophthalmology
training programs and university
and hospital libraries in low-income nations
HOST PROGRAMS
The Rotary Club Host Project sponsors
ophthalmologists from developing nations
to come to the United States for a
two-week professional, educational, social
and cultural immersion, beginning
with the first week in the hosting Rotary
Club’s community and concluding with
the second week at the Academy’s Annual
Meeting. Five international ophthalmologists
participated in this program in
2004.
“ I’ve come to realize that there are many
patients we give up on when actually
something can be done if we tried a bit
harder, like corneal scars which I learnt
can be improved or even treated with
things like Amniotic Membranes. We
are now in the process of seeing how we
can start a tissue bank and start doing
this procedure, which didn’t appear difficult
to perform. It was really an eye
opener.”
HOST PROGRAM PARTICIPANT
NAIROBI, KENYA
“ The program was excellent. I use the 90
DS and 78 DS lens for all patients with
retinal problems, and also in the plastic
surgery specialty, in the malignant case, I
find some new methods.”
HOST PROGRAM PARTICIPANT
KABUL, AFGHANISTAN
“ As it is, you are doing a great job not just
in the professional aspect but also in the
social aspect. The hosts were extremely
good people. It’s like you carried out interviews
and picked the best among all
the Americans! The program is a really
great idea and I hope many more people
will benefit from it like I did. And thanks
to [FAAO staff] who is one of the most
organized and patient people I’ve met in
my ‘short’ lifetime. Keep it up.”
The Visionary Society
Since its founding in 1980, the Academy
Foundation has been the recipient of
gifts and sponsorships from thousands of
members, individuals, corporations and
foundations. This broad-based support
has played an important role in supporting
the Academy’s mission and continues to
gain momentum.
Included among these donors are
a small, but growing, number of
supporters who have truly distinguished
themselves through the magnitude of
their contributions. There are currently
six donors to the Foundation whose
cumulative giving has reached a minimum
of $1,000,000. As a means of formally
recognizing their extreme generosity, as
well as to inspire others to be equally
philanthropic, the Foundation has created
“The Visionary Society.”
Membership in The Visionary Society is
open to any Academy member, individual,
corporation or foundation that contributes
a total of $1,000,000 or more for any
purpose to the Foundation. Those donors
who make gifts of $1,000,000 or more
within one fiscal year are designated as
“Gold Members.”
Legacy Society & Tribute Gifts
“ When Claire and I were deciding where to direct our
philanthropic support, we agreed that providing for ophthalmic
education and public service was most closely aligned with
our lifetime of work. To that end, Claire and I chose to
establish a $100,000 charitable remainder unitrust for the
Academy Foundation because it best reflected our gratitude and
commitment to the field of ophthalmology.”
