EPRI FOREWORD<br />

EPRI’s <strong>Energy</strong> <strong>St<strong>or</strong>age</strong> <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> <strong>Transmission</strong> & Distribution Applications program (Program 94) <strong>of</strong>fers a p<strong>or</strong>tfolio <strong>of</strong><br />

innovative energy st<strong>or</strong>age options to supp<strong>or</strong>t T&D owners in their objective to lower capital and operating costs <strong>of</strong><br />

their equipment. This is ac<strong>com</strong>plished by providing funders with credible and timely cost, per<strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong>mance and<br />

technology readiness data <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> all the energy st<strong>or</strong>age options suitable to T&D applications. Since peak shaving and<br />

other applications <strong>of</strong> energy st<strong>or</strong>age devices have been proven in specialized non-T&D applications the key issue <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong><br />

T&D decision makers is how to specify and deploy the proper energy st<strong>or</strong>age option <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> the re-regulated industry <strong>of</strong><br />

today.<br />

Consistent with the above goal, EPRI is presently engaged in a project to create and maintain a set <strong>of</strong> guidelines <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong><br />

the application <strong>of</strong> energy st<strong>or</strong>age technology in the electric utility T&D system. The project is titled:<br />

<strong>Handbook</strong> <strong>of</strong> Current <strong>Energy</strong> <strong>St<strong>or</strong>age</strong> Options F<strong>or</strong> Improved Reliability and Load<br />

Management At The <strong>Transmission</strong> & Distribution Level: Technology Status,<br />

Lessons-Learned, Applications & Economics.<br />

As a result <strong>of</strong> a recent increase <strong>of</strong> interest in and deployment <strong>of</strong> energy st<strong>or</strong>age options <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> T&D applications, a large<br />

body <strong>of</strong> in<strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong>mation has accumulated, but it is <strong>of</strong>ten not readily available to utility engineers in a single, succinct<br />

document. Facts on technology description, status, cost and per<strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong>mance in<strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong>mation, and lessons learned are <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

dispersed among multiple vend<strong>or</strong>s and users <strong>of</strong> prototype and developmental hardware. “Apple to apple”<br />

<strong>com</strong>parative data is virtually non-existent. This project intends to develop “one-stop-shop” handbook <strong>of</strong> current<br />

energy st<strong>or</strong>age options useful <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> T&D application.<br />

This rep<strong>or</strong>t is an interim rep<strong>or</strong>t. It focuses on a subset <strong>of</strong> the technologies that will ultimately be covered. There are<br />

seven chapters, each on a separate energy st<strong>or</strong>age technology, as follows:<br />

• Vanadium Redox Battery<br />

• Regenesys Battery<br />

• Sodium Sulfur (NAS) Battery<br />

• Superconducting Magnetic <strong>Energy</strong> <strong>St<strong>or</strong>age</strong> (SMES)<br />

• Flywheel <strong>Energy</strong> <strong>St<strong>or</strong>age</strong><br />

• Electrochemical Capacit<strong>or</strong> <strong>Energy</strong> <strong>St<strong>or</strong>age</strong><br />

• Compressed Air <strong>Energy</strong> <strong>St<strong>or</strong>age</strong> (CAES)<br />

These chapters have been auth<strong>or</strong>ed by different people, as shown on the title page <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> each. As this is an interim<br />

rep<strong>or</strong>t, there has been minimal attention paid to making the <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong>matting consistent.<br />

F<strong>or</strong> each technology, the topics covered in the handbook include:<br />

• Technology description;<br />

• Technology status (including lab and field test results and lessons-learned from existing plants and<br />

demonstrations);<br />

• Technology applications (including plant design <strong>com</strong>ponents and parameters, operating modes, efficiency,<br />

maintenance and life expectation); and<br />

• Cost-benefit economics (including establishing a business case <strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong> st<strong>or</strong>age).<br />

EPRI plans to issue the full version <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Handbook</strong> in 2003. Periodic updates will be undertaken in <strong>or</strong>der to<br />

maintain an up-to-date database <strong>of</strong> in<strong>f<strong>or</strong></strong>mation. The <strong>Handbook</strong> will be available in print and electronic (on CD-<br />

ROM) media. The CD-ROM version will have electronic links and full w<strong>or</strong>d and phrase search capability.<br />
