• Innovative Concept 3 -- Alstom is marketing the concept <strong>of</strong> adding an air turbine upstream <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>com</strong>bustion turbines [24]. A recuperat<strong>or</strong> recovers the heat in the low-pressure expander<br />

exhaust and preheats the <strong>com</strong>pressed air from the cavern to approximately 900 °F. The<br />

preheated <strong>com</strong>pressed air is expanded through an air turbine to drive a generat<strong>or</strong> in addition<br />

to the power generated by a GT24/GT11 <strong>com</strong>bustion turbine. The <strong>com</strong>bustion turbine and<br />

the air turbine can generate m<strong>or</strong>e power than the <strong>com</strong>bustion turbine alone. The <strong>com</strong>press<strong>or</strong><br />

train consists <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> mot<strong>or</strong>-driven intercooled <strong>com</strong>press<strong>or</strong>s operating in parallel to<br />

charge the underground st<strong>or</strong>age. This concept has the advantages <strong>of</strong> high peak power,<br />
