A Freight Plan for the NYMTC Region 2.3.2 Inadequate Access to Freight Handling Facilities As shown in Figure 2.12, landside access is inadequate to many existing or potential major freight generators in the region, such as JFK International Airport, Hunts Point Market, the Brooklyn waterfront, and rail intermodal terminals. Figure 2.13 shows the limitations on regional highway access to airports. For example, truck access to JFK depends on the congested Van Wyck Expressway, since trucks are prohibited from the Belt Parkway and must cross Brooklyn on local arterials.
