Paper Magiclay
Armature Wire 1.6 mm
Arbee Craft Glue
Masking Tape
1. Manipulate pieces of Paper
Magiclay to completely cover a
Poly Body to form the
dragonfly. Extend the tail out
from the Poly Body. Add two
Cane, Paper & Silk Dragon
eyes and six legs to the
creature.
2. Stretch and squeeze small
pieces of Paper Magiclay and
push these on to the body to
create a textured surface over
the entire insect.
3. Use lengths of Armature
Wire to create four wing
shapes, cover one side of each
wing with glue and press each
one down on to a sheet of
Cellophane. When dry, trim
around each wing to cut away
the excess paper.
4. Turn each wing over and glue
the other side of the wire. Press
each one down on to
pieces of Metallic
Jersey. When dry, trim
around each wing to cut
away the excess material.
5. Glue the wings on to the
top of the dragonfly body
and cover the join with
Paper Magiclay.
6. Paint the dragonfly and
whilst the paint is still wet
sprinkle Glitter over the
creature.
7. Dribble lines of paint over
the wings and sprinkle Glitter
over the wet paint.
E
DREAMER steps
Experiment
Try using different forms for
the body of the dragonfly, e.g.
Scrunched up newspaper and
taped into shape might be an
alternative form to work the
Paper Magiclay over.
Materials
PVA mixture (50/50 PVA
and water)
Masking Tape
Tissue Paper White
Gauze Paper
Pongee Silk (hand painted &
set using Procion Dyes, Sun
Dyes or Dual Fabric Paints)
1. Pre soak 2.5 mm Cane in hot
water for approx. 5 minutes
and hang out to dry.
2. Create a Cane dragonfly
armature using Masking Tape
to secure all sections of the
body and wings.
3. Paint each section of the
Cane with the PVA mixture and
cover it with a sheet of white
Tissue Paper slightly larger
than the armature.
4. Cover the entire dragonfly
armature with a layer of white
Tissue Paper.
5. Add a second layer of Gauze
Paper to all or sections of the
sculpture using the PVA
mixture to adhere the paper to
the shape.
6. Add a layer of decorated
Pongee Silk to the desired
sections of the sculpture using
the PVA mixture to secure it.
7. Brush on the PVA mixture
over the entire shape, (quite
liberally as this mixture
hardens as it dries and gives
the sculpture its form). Set
aside to dry overnight.
8. Use full strength PVA or a
Hot Melt Glue Gun to add
Sequins, beads, Creative
Metallic Braid, and a variety of
threads to add hi-lights to
the dragonfly
sculpture.
Exhibit
Create a family of dragonflies of
above method and install them in
the art room hanging
from different
lengths of
