3.2.2.3 Transportation machinery (other than winding)<br />
There were altogether 11 (25% <strong>of</strong> all fatal accidents) accidents involving 11 fatalities due to<br />
transportation machinery (other than winding) during the year <strong>2009</strong>.<br />
The cause-wise details may be seen from the following table:-<br />

The analysis <strong>of</strong> causes revealed the following:<br />
Transportation machinery (other than winding)<br />
Conveyor: One person died due to crush between running drum and belt.<br />
Dumpers/Tippers: Eight accidents occurred causing eight killing due to truck and tanker<br />
contributing (72.7%) <strong>of</strong> total accidents due to this cause:<br />
Two accidents due to brake failure <strong>of</strong> dumper and tipper.<br />
Six accidents due to ran over <strong>of</strong> dumper and tipper.<br />
Truck & Tanker: Two accidents occurred causing two killing due to truck & tanker contributing<br />
(18.1%) <strong>of</strong> total accident due this cause.<br />
Other (Wagon): There is no accident due to this cause during the year <strong>2009</strong>.<br />

It is seen that most accident due to transportation machinery and other machinery were<br />
caused due to operator‟s negligence, indiscipline and lack <strong>of</strong> supervisions. Improved<br />
standards <strong>of</strong> training and education <strong>of</strong> workers are necessary to control such accidents. Some<br />
cases the equipment failure was observed due to poor maintenance and called for higher<br />
standard <strong>of</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong> machinery in the opencast sector.<br />
