In continuation to DGMS (Approval)/Circular No.5 dated 25.11.2008, regarding<br />
approval <strong>of</strong> Dust Suppression/Prevention System in Drilling machines used in mines a<br />
Notification No. 16(38)79-Genl/6095 Dated 25.11.2008 published in the Gazette <strong>of</strong><br />
India Part – II Section 3 (i) on 13.12.2008 vide GSR 215 is reproduced below for strict<br />
compliance.<br />
“In exercise <strong>of</strong> the powers conferred on me under Regulation 123(6)(b)(ii) <strong>of</strong> Coal<br />
<strong>Mines</strong> Regulation, 1957 and Regulation 124(6)(b)(ii) <strong>of</strong> Metalliferous <strong>Mines</strong><br />
Regulation 1961, I, M.M. Sharma, Chief Inspector <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mines</strong> also designated as<br />
Director <strong>General</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mines</strong> <strong>Safety</strong> hereby declare 31 st December 2008 as date from<br />
which following item will not be used in Coal <strong>Mines</strong> and Metalliferous <strong>Mines</strong> unless<br />
the same has been approved by me by a general or special order in writing.<br />

1.0 BACKGROUND<br />
In early years in mining, timber was the primary material being used as supports <strong>of</strong> the<br />
underground excavations in belowground mines. In those days, good quality treated<br />
timbers were available in sample and was also being imported from Burma (Now<br />
Myanmar). Increased exploitation <strong>of</strong> forest resources and rampant deforestation<br />
resulted in scarcity <strong>of</strong> timbers even for house hold uses. Steel then came into market<br />
