2.0 Coal Mines
2.1 General
Number of operating coalmines during 2009 was 583 as compared to 569 in 2008. Companywise
number of coal mines and production is given in table: 13.

Table-14 shows the number of underground coalmines having gassy seams of different
degrees.

During the year total numbers of working mines have increased from 569 in 2008 to 569 in
2009. Output of coal increased from 506.00 million tonnes in 2008 to 559.00 million tonnes in
2009. Coal mines under M/s.Coal India Limited contributed 421.00 million tonnes of coal
during the year 2009. Average daily employment in mines increased from 369,000 in 2008 to
374,000 in 2009. The output per manshift was increased from 4.25 in 2008 to 4.67 during
2009. Trend in average daily employment and output per manshift in coalmines is given table:
