Thinking insulation for thermal solar collectors
Solar thermal collectors allow users to generate cheap hot water and cut the amount
of energy needed for domestic heating. As the use of solar collectors grows, so do the
challenges faced by producers, who are now confronted with constant demand for
improvements in quality, performance, productivity and competitive prices. This is where
insulation plays an important role.
Insulation is needed in solar thermal collectors to trap and concentrate heat energy. By
avoiding thermal losses through the rear and the sides of the collector, insulation optimizes
the efficiency of the collector, enabling the maximum amount of collected heat to be
transfered to the circulating fluid.

Optimise of Absorber Efficiency
Thanks to their increased flexibility, fitting ULTI-
MATE or glass wool products into the solar collector
is simple. They adapt to provide a perfect fit
within the collector, thus cutting thermal losses at
the frame edges.
Moreover, the natural flexibility and resilient wool
fits perfectly to the absorber by enveloping the
tubes. Avoiding any space gap, the thermal performance
is even more efficient.

Thin solution : Case study
To maintain a thermal resistance value of R=1, for instance, increasing the density of ISOVER ULTIMATE
or Glass Wool products from 15 to 35 kg/m 3 will decrease the thickness requirement by a full 25%.

Best light transmittance, without fogging
Whilst the service temperature of a solar collector can go up to 150°C, stagnation (slow circulation of
the calorific fluid due to low hot water consumption or system failure) can raise the temperature inside
the collector up to 230°C. This can cause the different organic compounds within the insulation, casing,
joints etc. of the collector to evaporate and condense on the solar glazing.
Although this outgassing does not affect the performance of the insulation product, it creates fogging
and lowers the light transmittance through the glazing, affecting the performance of the solar energy
absorbing system.
ISOVER Solar products are specially designed to avoid any fogging deposit or any condensation on the
glazing even with stagnant high temperaturese in the collectors. Our solar products have passed severe
fogging tests and have official laboratory certification.
