FALL 2008 COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK: HEALTH AND COUNSELING EDITION COMMONLY PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS The following is a list of medications commonly prescribed for mental health issues. Medication can be an important part of a mental health treatment plan. Taking medication is a serious issue, however, and your client and his or her guardian(s) should work closely with the prescriber to control the dosage and any side effects of prescribed medication. Remember, your client’s psychiatrist or prescriber is a professional who is trained to dispense medication in appropriate dosages. It is imperative to your client’s success to monitor the effects of prescribed medication in the correct dose. Communicate often with your client’s psychiatrist or prescriber about both positive and negative effects. If your client experiences persistent or worsening side effects related to their prescription medication, notify his or her psychiatrist or presciber promptly.
