MISSION<br />

The <strong>Office</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Diversity</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />

(ODGE) coord<strong>in</strong>ates and leads the University’s <strong>in</strong>itiatives<br />

<strong>in</strong> the recruitment, fund<strong>in</strong>g, retention and<br />

graduation of a diverse graduate and professional<br />

student body. In addition, the ODGE works closely<br />

with The <strong>Graduate</strong> School and other units that<br />

are concerned with diversity and multiculturalism.<br />

Our services <strong>in</strong>clude recruitment and consultation<br />

on the application process, academic support and<br />

mentor<strong>in</strong>g, and outreach to graduate programs<br />

to enhance diverse student experiences.<br />

Application Guidel<strong>in</strong>es<br />

The on-l<strong>in</strong>e application fee is $75 per<br />

program. Many departments have<br />

deadl<strong>in</strong>es as early as December 1 <strong>for</strong><br />

the follow<strong>in</strong>g fall semester. To apply<br />

<strong>for</strong> graduate admission or learn about<br />

specific deadl<strong>in</strong>es, requirements, and<br />

<strong>in</strong>structions <strong>for</strong> your program of <strong>in</strong>terest,<br />

so you can receive important <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation<br />

about your graduate program of<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest and the application process.<br />

Fund<strong>in</strong>g Your <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />

For the 2012–2013 academic year,<br />

full-time (6–14 credits) tuition will be<br />

$14,570 <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>-state residents and<br />

$22,320 <strong>for</strong> non-residents per year.<br />

Teach<strong>in</strong>g, research, and adm<strong>in</strong>istrative<br />

assistantships and fellowships provide<br />

the most common <strong>for</strong>ms of support <strong>for</strong><br />

graduate students. Assistantships may<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude a stipend, cost of tuition and a<br />

health premium <strong>for</strong> university-subsidized<br />

comprehensive health <strong>in</strong>surance. Tuition<br />

is waived <strong>for</strong> students hold<strong>in</strong>g a 50%<br />

assistantship. S<strong>in</strong>ce departments award<br />

assistantships appo<strong>in</strong>tments as well<br />

as other field-specific fellowships and<br />

tra<strong>in</strong>eeships, please contact the Director<br />

of <strong>Graduate</strong> Studies <strong>in</strong> your program <strong>for</strong><br />

more <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation. If program funds are<br />

limited, students may f<strong>in</strong>d campus-wide<br />

assistantships through the <strong>Graduate</strong><br />

Assistantship Employment <strong>Office</strong>.<br />

<strong>Diversity</strong> of Views and Experiences<br />

(DOVE) Fellowship<br />

Adm<strong>in</strong>istered by ODGE, the DOVE Fellowship<br />

awarded to first-year students<br />

from under-represented groups, provides<br />

a stipend, tuition, and subsidized<br />

health <strong>in</strong>surance <strong>for</strong> one academic year.<br />

Prospective students must be nom<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

by a graduate program. Students<br />

who wish to be nom<strong>in</strong>ated should contact<br />

the Director of <strong>Graduate</strong> Studies <strong>in</strong><br />

Advance. The recipients of the DOVE<br />

Fellowship are encouraged to participate<br />

<strong>in</strong> the Community of Scholars Program<br />

(COSP). At least two fellowships<br />

will be awarded to a McNair Scholar. A<br />

Community of Scholars Program<br />

(CSOP)<br />

The Community of Scholars Program<br />

(COSP) works towards creat<strong>in</strong>g an<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutional environment that supports<br />

the academic and professional success<br />

of graduate students (US citizens<br />

and permanent residents) who are<br />

under-represented <strong>in</strong> academia. COSP<br />

focuses on community build<strong>in</strong>g and the<br />

professional development of graduate<br />

students. For further <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation and <strong>for</strong><br />

a schedule of workshops and events,<br />

Diverse Communities<br />

Our communities of color are grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and M<strong>in</strong>nesota has the fourth highest<br />

rate of m<strong>in</strong>ority population <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong><br />

the country. Four dist<strong>in</strong>ct communities<br />

of color contribute to the thriv<strong>in</strong>g cultural<br />

life <strong>in</strong> the Tw<strong>in</strong> Cities. The University<br />

of M<strong>in</strong>nesota Tw<strong>in</strong> Cities campus has<br />

approximately 52,500 students of which<br />

15% are students of color.<br />
