APPENDIX C<br />

Participating Universities<br />

<strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Oxford<br />

Oxford is the oldest university in<br />

the English-speaking world and<br />

lays claim <strong>to</strong> nine centuries <strong>of</strong> continuous<br />

existence. Oxford attracts<br />

students and scholars from across<br />

the globe, with almost a quarter <strong>of</strong> our students<br />

from overseas. More than 130 nationalities are<br />

represented among a student population <strong>of</strong> over<br />

18,000.<br />

Oxford is a collegiate university, with 39 selfgoverning<br />

colleges related <strong>to</strong> the University in a<br />

federal system. <strong>The</strong>re are also seven Permanent<br />

Private Halls, founded by different Christian<br />

denominations. Thirty colleges and all halls<br />

admit students for both undergraduate and graduate<br />

degrees. Seven other colleges are for graduates<br />

only; one has Fellows only, and one specializes<br />

in part-time and continuing education.<br />

During the 20th century, Oxford has added <strong>to</strong><br />

its humanistic core with a major new research<br />

capacity in the natural and applied sciences,<br />

including medicine. In so doing it has enhanced<br />

and strengthened its traditional role as an international<br />

focus for learning and a forum for intellectual<br />

debate.<br />

<strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Paris I: Panthéon-Sorbonne<br />

This leading French university<br />

was founded in 1970 after the student<br />

revolution <strong>of</strong> May 1968, the<br />

Sorbonne traces its his<strong>to</strong>ric roots<br />

back <strong>to</strong> 1257. It aims <strong>to</strong> bring<br />

<strong>to</strong>gether the Humanities, Law and Economics,<br />

subjects previously taught in highly distinct and<br />

hierarchal Faculties.<br />

Some 40,000 are enrolled in 14 teaching and<br />

research departments and five Institutes, which<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer <strong>to</strong>p level degree courses in law, political science,<br />

economics, management and the humanities.<br />

<strong>The</strong> campus is spread across Paris, notably<br />

occupying part <strong>of</strong> the Sorbonne and other prestigious<br />

French university buildings.<br />

Paris I is also at the centre <strong>of</strong> a rich network<br />

<strong>of</strong> international relations stretching across the<br />

five continents and continues <strong>to</strong> play a major role<br />

in the training <strong>of</strong> researchers, academics, judges,<br />

lawyers, senior managers and <strong>to</strong>p French civil<br />

servants. It is at the forefront <strong>of</strong> research and<br />

teaching in the fields <strong>of</strong> European Studies,<br />

International Relations, Management and<br />

Communications.<br />

Leiden University<br />

Leiden is the oldest university in<br />

the Netherlands. It was founded in<br />

February 1575, as a gift from<br />

William <strong>of</strong> Orange <strong>to</strong> the citizens <strong>of</strong><br />

Leiden after a long siege by the<br />

Spaniards. It was the first university in the<br />

Netherlands <strong>to</strong> practice freedom <strong>of</strong> belief and<br />

religion, allowing philosophers like Spinoza and<br />

Descartes <strong>to</strong> develop their ideas. <strong>The</strong> university<br />

has three guiding principles: an international orientation;<br />

intensive research; and a high quality<br />

<strong>of</strong> education and research.<br />

<strong>The</strong> university has approximately 17,000 students<br />

and 4,000 staff members and has nine faculties,<br />

a School <strong>of</strong> Management and a School <strong>of</strong><br />

Education. <strong>The</strong> faculties <strong>of</strong>fer a varied range <strong>of</strong><br />

bachelor’s, master’s and PhD programmes. In<br />

addition, three other units <strong>of</strong>fer post-academic<br />

training: the Institute for Environmental<br />

Sciences (CML), the School <strong>of</strong> Education<br />

(ICLON) and Campus <strong>The</strong> Hague.<br />

In coming years, the University intends <strong>to</strong><br />

make major contributions <strong>to</strong> society in the areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> prosperity, well-being and culture. To <strong>this</strong> end,<br />

the University is committed <strong>to</strong> both recruiting<br />

and developing talent. This will involve secondary<br />

school pupils, university students, and young<br />

researchers and academics.<br />

<strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Bonn<br />

Bonn has a tradition going back<br />

almost 200 years, a student body<br />

numbering 30,000 and an excellent<br />

reputation at home and abroad. It<br />

is <strong>of</strong> the leading universities in<br />
