A3 NCC
The soware is engineered to conform to volume 2 BCA 2012 and its referenced documents.
The individual models within SmartFrame are set up to follow the strength and serviceability criteria
as listed in AS 1684:1999 as a basis, BUT have been modified in the following manner:
1. Load combinaon factors have been amended to reflect AS 1170.0:2002
2. Permanent, imposed and other acons as defined within NCC Volume 2 Part 2.1 reflect the
worst case values of AS 1170.1, Timber soluons soware and AS 1684.1:1997 e.g. Balcony
LL of 3.0 KPa within AS 1684.1 is greater than that specified in AS 1170.1
3. Serviceability limits for glulam members follow the Glued Laminated Timber Associaon
(GLTAA) Technical data sheet No. 3 – Uniform Design Criteria. This acon is to keep the design
of SmartLam glulam consistent with span tables etc produced with the GLTAA soware.
The following acons listed within NCC Volume 2 Part 2.1 are NOT included within the soware:
i. Earthquake
ii. Liquid pressure
iii. Ground water acon
iv. Rainwater (including ponding)
v. Earth pressure
Controlled Document – Soware Quality Assurance Program 22
Soware Quality Assurance
To maintain its currency to the NCC, the mandatory soware registraon process expires at the
end of 12 months and coincides with the release of annual NCC revisions so that the user is forced
to re‐register the soware and thus any necessary amendment or changes to the soware can be
implemented.
A4 Scope
The FREE SmartFrame soware is a structural analysis, design, layout and take‐off tool primarily
for the design of proprietary SmartFrame Engineered Timber Products (EWP) but also allows the
user to design non‐proprietary common mber groups which have Characterisc Properes defined
within Table 2.1 of AS 1720.1. No tables for the design of SmartFrame EWP (I‐Joists, LVL and
Glulam) are included in AS 1684 and as such are an “alternave soluon” within the BCA. Smart‐
Frame soware also allows the user to:
A5 User Qualificaons
i) design bracing requirements as per secon 8 of AS 1684.2
ii) design hold down requirements as per secon 9 of AS 1684.2
iii) create standard fixing details for SmartFrame EWP
iv) fixing brackets for SmartFrame EWP and generic solid mber sizes
v) produce a comprehensive report which includes computaons and cerficaon
documents
The SmartFrame soware is specifically targeted at the building industry praconer that has an
understanding of AS 1684 and is capable of reading the span table within thatdocument.
There is no capacity for users to alter/amend or vary any of the pre‐set engineering parameters
within the program or material characterisc properes.
Advanced Features within this module are protected from “non‐competency assessed” users by
the adopon of differing Registraon Codes, with certain advanced features only available to users
who demonstrate wrien competency in the relevant areas.
The full descripon of the SmartFrame Training and the associated competency levels is included
in clause 4.2‐4.3 of the SQAP.
The SmartFrame training program is currently recognised by the Victorian Building Commission
with Registered Building Professionals successfully compleng the program being awarded 2 CPD
points.
A full list of qualified operators including their level of competency is maintained (SQAP form 16)
A6 Product Installaon Instrucons
The SmartFrame suite contains a module called “Connecon Details” which includes all the nonindustry
standard fixing details for SmartFrame EWP .
These details are in three (3) different formats, PDF, DXF and DWG files. The soware user can
print the required details, create a collecon of these details and print or import to their CAD
drawing or add the relevant details to the “Construcon Issue” drawing produced by the Smart‐
Frame soware.
On installaon, the SmartFrame soware also creates a separate SmartFrame Design Library on
Controlled Document – Soware Quality Assurance Program 23
Soware Quality Assurance
the desktop, displaying all the relevant SmartFrame EWP Design Guides as PDFs, the user able to
view each of the Design Guides as a flip book.
All Design Guide for SmartFrame product are also available in hard copy from any Tilling Timber Pty
Ltd state office and selected SmartFrame resellers.
A7 SmartFrame Soware Help Guide
An integrated Help Guide is built into the SmartFrame soware
