THE DEGREE IN ENERGY MANAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY
(MES) IS AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAM BUILT TO PRO-
VIDE WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION FOR ALL THOSE WHO PUT
SUSTAINABILITY AS THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY IN THE DE-
VELOPMENT OF OUR WORLD. STUDENTS RECEIVE THEORETI-
CAL AND PRACTICAL TRAINING, USING EPFL’S STATE-OF–THE-
ART RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT FACILITIES.

The Master in Energy Management and Sustainability offers a
unique international experience. It takes place on the EPFL Campus
in Switzerland, where most of the background and discipline-specific
courses are taken. The mandatory internship may be done in the United Arab
Emirates.
RESEARCH AT EPFL MIDDLE EAST
EPFL Middle East research activity focuses on the following five areas:
• Structural wind engineering
• Energy
• Water resources
• Urban design and environment
• Transportation
Master students enrolled in the MES program are expected to interact strongly
with the research labs at EPFL Middle East, according to their educational
and professional objectives.
PROFESSIONAL OUTLOOK
This new project-focused curriculum is built on scientific rigor and professional
practice, to provide a unique, interdisciplinary training in energy management
and sustainability. The new generation of problem solvers will be able to understand
complex systems such as smart grids for electricity distribution, water
dissemination systems, environmental services and electronic networks that
control energy consumption. And ultimately, to be able to both maximize their
efficient use and minimize their negative impact on society.

CURRICULUM
Strong emphasis will be placed on dealing with engineering tasks, taking
into consideration important technical, economical, environmental, safety
and social constraints. Students will also gain valuable skills in project management.
Multidisciplinary projects are proposed at the beginning of the program, and
a tutor is assigned for each project. Students will work in a team to address
these projects. An industrial internship will provide practical experience in
a professional setting.
The elective subjects are to be chosen in the course catalogue of the EPFL
School of Engineering and School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental
Engineering.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Applied Physics.
APPLICATION DEADLINES AND FUNDING
The program now invites applications for its third edition, starting in September
2013, with a graduation in the fall of 2015. Candidates are selected
on a very competitive base, and those admitted to the program receive a
full scholarship covering tuition fees, all living expenses, a laptop, the course
material and the necessary travels between Switzerland and the United Arab
Emirates.
