content of these papers is tailored to appeal to this segment. The shift to<br />
more populist journalism is not necessarily a bad thing, Professor Sparks<br />
says, although intellectuals might not think so. “The rise of free sheets has<br />
meant that newspaper readership in Hong Kong is on the rise,” he says.<br />
According to a survey conducted by an advertising group in September<br />
2011, only 20% of the respondents indicated that quality is a decisive<br />
factor in choosing a newspaper to read. Convenience of access is more<br />
important.<br />

Nevertheless, the majority agreed that the quality of paid newspapers is<br />
higher. Thus, the majority of free newspaper readers<br />
also said they read paid newspapers, indicating that<br />
at this stage, free newspapers will not totally replace<br />
paid newspapers.<br />
Mr Lau is of the opinion that each newspaper in<br />
Hong Kong largely caters to a different niche. “The<br />
free papers don’t invest in exclusives or investigative<br />
journalism. The paid newspapers generally have<br />
more substantial content.” He remains optimistic<br />
about the future of newspapers in Hong Kong. “The<br />
leading print newspapers are still full of advertising<br />
and making money. If you’ve got a good product,<br />
you’ll find takers.”<br />
