When Professor Colin Sparks of the Department of Journalism of the
School of Communication first arrived in Hong Kong from the UK in
2010, he was surprised to find a vibrant newspaper scene. Currently
there are 14 printed paid dailies and seven tabloid-sized free sheets in
Hong Kong. This is in sharp contrast to the West where the prognosis for
the industry has been doom and gloom.
“In the US and parts of Europe, newspapers are closing down, whereas
in Hong Kong, new newspapers are still being launched,” says Professor
Sparks. “Sharp Daily was launched shortly after I arrived.”
In total, the circulation of newspapers in Hong Kong is about 4.2 million,
a substantial figure. “Even before the free dailies were launched,
newspaper readership was considered high,” notes Mr CK Lau,
Principal Lecturer of the Department of Journalism and a veteran of the
newspaper industry. “Media surveys showed that many people read more
than one newspaper.”
Growing industry
Professor Sparks is interested in
why Hong Kong appears to be
bucking the trend of the decline of
newspapers experienced by other
developed places. “In thinking
about newspapers, one normally
hears about gloom in the West and
boom in the East,” he says. While
Hong Kong is located in the East,
he suspects that the reasons for the
thriving newspaper industry here

and Mainland China. “In India and
Mainland China, newspapers are
doing well because of the social changes such as rapid urbanisation.”
Hong Kong, he says, is different. It is already highly urbanised and the
fourth most densely populated place in the world. It is also a prosperous

如 《 爽 報 》 便 是 在 我 來 港 後 不 久 創 刊 。」
香 港 報 章 的 總 發 行 量 約 420 萬 份 , 數 字 驚 人 。
新 聞 系 首 席 講 師 兼 資 深 報 業 人 劉 志 權 先 生
說 :「 即 使 在 免 費 報 章 出 現 前 , 香 港 的 讀 者 人 數
也 偏 高 。 一 些 媒 體 調 查 結 果 顯 示 許 多 人 閱 讀 超 過
一 份 報 紙 。」
不 斷 增 長 的 行 業
其 他 已 發 展 地 區 的 報 業 均 走 下 坡 , 香 港 卻 能 抗 衡
大 勢 ,Sparks 教 授 對 此 感 到 好 奇 。「 每 每 談 到 報
業 , 總 是 說 東 方 興 盛 而 西 方 衰 落 。」 據 他 推 測 ,
儘 管 香 港 與 印 度 和 中 國 同 樣 位 處 東 方 , 但 報 業
蓬 勃 的 原 因 不 盡 相 同 。 他 說 :「 印 度 和 中 國 的
報 業 興 盛 是 基 於 社 會 轉 變 , 例 如 急 速 的 都 市 化
發 展 。」
香 港 的 情 況 卻 有 異 。 香 港 已 高 度 都 市 化 , 是 全
球 人 口 密 度 第 四 高 的 地 區 , 繁 榮 興 旺 , 在 聯 合 國
開 發 計 劃 署 公 布 的 人 類 發 展 指 數 排 第 13 位 , 因
此 一 般 人 預 期 香 港 報 業 會 跟 隨 其 他 先 進 地 區 般 下
滑 , 香 港 卻 反 其 道 而 行 。
經 深 入 研 究 本 港 報 業 的 發 展 , 並 與 業 界 的 資 深 行
政 人 員 討 論 後 ,Sparks 教 授 相 信 免 費 報 紙 帶 動 了
整 體 的 報 紙 發 行 量 上 升 。 自 《 都 市 日 報 》 於 2002
年 登 陸 後 , 香 港 先 後 有 六 份 免 費 報 紙 推 出 。 香 港
的 城 市 規 劃 以 縱 向 式 群 居 發 展 為 主 , 鐵 路 人 流

I read two newspapers everyday: Sing Tao Daily and South China Morning Post. I also read the
news on Yahoo with my smartphone. I seldom read free newspapers as I think quality of content
does matter.
