Founded on Care
When Hans Demant founded Oticon in 1904, he
was not driven by a desire to conquer the world
but by something far closer to home: his wife was
hard of hearing and he desperately wanted to help
her and others like her. When Hans passed away in
1910, his son William took over the company, and
turned it into a successful enterprise.
In 1957 William created a charitable institution
which today is known as ‘The Oticon Foundation’.
The foundation sponsors activities committed to
raising awareness of hearing and hearing loss,
improving the quality of life for those who are
affected by it, and breaking down the stigma
associated with this condition.
Today the Oticon Foundation is the main shareholder
in the William Demant Holding group, of
which Oticon is a part. The group employs more
than 5,500 people worldwide and its revenues total
DKK 5,700 million. Oticon’s products are distributed
in more than 100 countries, and 95% of the Groups
revenues are generated outside Denmark.
Visit Oticon at ‘King’s Hill‘
To the west of Copenhagen, on a hilltop surrounded
by rolling fields, lies a modern glass construction
called Kongebakken (King’s Hill). Home to Oticon’s
headquarters, this striking building boasts stateof-the-art
laboratories, futuristic ‘innovation zones‘,
and top-notch educational facilities. Within these
walls, specialists of all ages and nationalities strive
to restore the gift of hearing to those who have
lost this precious ability.
