CBS Greening Initiatives - The Ruach
At Beth Shalom we are always looking for ways to be a
“greener” community. Our 100% compostable Kiddush is
a great example as is our community garden. We are
offering the opportunity to receive our monthly
weekly Cybershul-please email Marjie at
info@bethshalomseattle.org and let her know.
CBS Gift Card / Scrip Program
The Beth Shalom scrip program is expanding! We have
recently added Whole Foods, at $100 and $25, gift
cards to our set of offerings. If you regularly shop at
Whole Foods, this is your opportunity to support Beth
Shalom without paying anything extra at the grocery
store. If you have questions about gift cards or the scrip
program, please contact Kevin Coskey, at
scrip@bethshalomseattle.org.
Message to the congregation from Rabbi Elana
Zaiman
I am writing to correct myself. In seeking texts for
Gabriel Rosenbloom's charge, I looked at many, among
them, many poetic texts. The text I chose to quote,
however, was not the text from Yehuda Amichai, but from
Zelda. Since many of you mentioned you wanted a copy
of the poem I include it here. We have a saying in our
tradition that when we quote something in the name of
the one who says it we bring redemption to the world. So,
in order to bring redemption to our world, which our world
badly needs, I humbly offer my apologies.
The poet Zelda wrote the poem, Each Of Us Has A
Name. The translation below is by Marcia Falk
“Each of us has a name, given by God, and given by our
parents.
Each of us has a name, given by our stature and our
smile, and given by what we wear.
Each of us has a name, given by the mountains, and given
by our walls.
Each of us has a name, given by the stars, and given by
our neighbors.
Each of us has a name, given by our sins, and given by
our longing.
Each of us has a name, given by our enemies, and given
by our love.
Each of us has a name, given by our celebrations, and
given by our work.
Each of us has a name, given by the seasons, and given
by our blindness.
Each of us has a name, given by the sea, and given by our
death.”
TODDAH RABAH
