Business majors are not required to complete a minor. Residency The final 10 courses of the four-year general degree program must be completed at Redeemer, normally in two successive terms of full-time registration. The final 20 courses of the four-year major, honours and combined honours degree program must be completed at Redeemer, normally in four successive terms of full-time registration. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by the Registrar, through a written letter of appeal. Core Requirements Students must satisfy all core requirements as outlined in the next section. As 100-level core courses must ordinarily be completed by the end of year two, upper-level core substitutes are available in a number of areas. Consult the Registrar’s Office for more information. Major Concentration Students must complete a departmental or group concentration of studies (minimum of 10 courses). For graduation, the overall average required in the major is 4.00 for a general degree, 6.00 for a four-year major degree and 7.00 for an honours degree. Students who complete a group major or minor are required to complete their additional minor or major in disciplines other than the principal discipline in the group major or minor. No one course may count towards both a major and a second major or minor. 53
Minor Concentration The completion of a secondary area of concentration (6 or 7 courses) is required in all programs except for students in a Business major. A minimum average of 4.00 must be attained in the minor for graduation. Students may not complete more than eight courses from the department of their minor without first applying for approval to complete a major in the department. Electives, Major/Minor Cognates or Program Requirements Once courses for the student’s major(s), minor(s) and core requirements are chosen, students select the balance of their courses to fit their particular interests or program. For certain major or minor concentrations additional cognate courses must be completed; certain programs of study include related requirements or professional courses beyond the major or minor. Changing Degrees After Graduating Students who have completed their degree at Redeemer University College are able to enrol in additional courses at Redeemer in order to complete a higher degree. Students may change their degrees in the following ways: • From a Four-Year General Degree to a Four-Year Major or Honours Degree • From a Four-Year Major Degree to an Honours Degree In most situations, students will need to enrol in those courses needed to earn a higher degree in their major (i.e. from a 10 course major in English to a 16 course honours major in English), and satisfy all degree program requirements. If a student is changing degrees, he or she is allowed to add a new major or minor into the program. All additional courses must be completed at Redeemer University College. Students who change their degrees are required to surrender their first degree certificate before a new degree will be printed and released. This policy is available only to Redeemer University College graduates, and is not extended to students who have completed their degrees at other universities. Core Requirements for Degree Programs Foundational History Two courses are required. Students take two introductory courses, ordinarily in their first year of studies: History 105 and History 107 or 109. Students in the science program will take History 105 and History 313. Year three or four students who still require a history core requirement will be assigned to a 200- or 300-level substitute. History 105 is required in year one. Philosophy Two courses are required. Students normally take Philosophy 121 in year two and one advanced course in the philosophy of a given area, such as philosophy of religion, history, science, etc. Students are encouraged to take the second philosophy course in the area of their specialization. Some programs require a specific philosophy course: students in a science program must take Philosophy 314; majors in history must take Philosophy 355; majors in business may use Business 430 to satify this requirement; and students in a physical education major may use Physical Education 432 to satisfy this requirement. For students in the concurrent education program, Education 306 satisfies this requirement. Religion and Theology Two courses are required. Students take Religion 101 in year one and take a second course in religion & theology (either Religion 201 or 251) in year two or three. Capstone Course One course required (part of a major). Each major has a capstone course included in the requirements. This course integrates the major themes of the discipline as well as foundational philosophical and historical issues. Students with multiple majors are required to take the capstone for each major. Capstone courses are typically taken in year four. General Composition and Literature One to two courses are required. Core requirements in English depend upon the academic standing in Grade 12 U English (or equivalent for students educated outside of Ontario). • Students with 70% or better in Grade 12 U English will take English 103 or 104 in year one. • Students with less than 70% in Grade 12 U English, students without Grade 12 U English, or mature students will be required to take the English Writing Diagnostic Examination before starting classes. The outcome of this examination will determine one of the following requirements: • English 101 and one of English 103 or 104 • Mandatory tutoring under the supervision of the Writing Centre and both English 103 and 104 • English 103 and 104 Communication A course is recommended. Students are advised to take a course in oral communication skills. This course is especially recommended for students in business or education or in pre-seminary preparation. 54
