The Redeemer Student Fund Loan features a forgiveness factor. The
longer a student remains enrolled full-time at Redeemer, the larger the
percentage of the loan that will be forgiven, up to a maximum of 80%.
Transcripts will be withheld if students default on established payment
plans as described on the applicable promissory note.
• Complete one year of study, 20% of the loan will be forgiven.
• Complete two years of study, 40% of the loan will be forgiven.
• Complete three years of study, 60% of the loan will be forgiven.
• Complete four years of study, 80% of the loan will be forgiven.
Funds are applied to student accounts, half at the beginning of
each term. Redeemer Student Fund Loans are not available to fifthyear
students except those who are in a five-year program, namely
the Education Program or the Business Co-op Program. Application
forms can be obtained from www.redeemer.ca/financing for incoming
students and www.redeemer.ca/finaid for returning students.
Interest Relief Bursary
The Interest Relief Bursary is awarded to students who require a bank
loan to help them meet the costs of Redeemer University College. Awards
are made on the basis of need and can range from $100 in the first year
of application to a maximum of $1,225. The bursary was created to help
students minimize any accumulated interest debt on a bank loan.
To qualify, a student must have borrowed from a lending institution
and paid interest. Applications are available from www.redeemer.
ca/finaid and are due in mid-March. The student must submit
documentation of being in receipt of a bank loan.
Awards, Bursaries and Scholarships
Redeemer has established a number of scholarships, bursaries and
awards to recognize academic success and provide financial assistance
to students. A scholarship is awarded solely on the basis of academic
merit; a bursary is awarded on the basis of criteria which includes
financial need; an award can combine a variety of criteria including
grades, program and other specific requirements. Students are eligible
for scholarships, bursaries and awards (hereafter referred to as awards)
only when they are enrolled full-time in a degree program.
Calculation of GPA for All Awards
Eligibility for awards is based on full-time enrolment (4 courses
or 12 credit hours) in both terms of an academic year at Redeemer
University College. Grade point average (GPA) calculation is based on
the previous year’s academic average (fall and winter term, full-time
studies only), with the following consideration granted:
• Students with Disabilities: Those students who have a disability
and are enrolled in 60% of a full course load will be eligible for
full consideration for all awards. Each student’s situation will be
reviewed on an individual basis.
• For students who begin full-time studies in the winter term,
eligibility for all awards offered in the next year will be based on the
one-term average only.
Disbursement of Awards
All awards are disbursed 50% in the fall term and 50% in the winter
term. To receive the full value of any award, a student must be enrolled
in a minimum of 4 courses (12 credit hours) in each term. A student
who has received an award and enrols in 3 courses (9 credit hours) in
one term will receive the award on a pro-rated basis (60% of the award
total) unless otherwise stated in the conditions of the specific award.
Students who are academically eligible for awards, but who will not
be paying full-time tuition due to pre-paid courses, will be eligible
for a percentage of their award in proportion to the number of courses
that must be paid for. For example, a student who needs to complete
ten courses, eight of which are pre-paid courses, is eligible to be
considered for one-fifth of a full award.
Deferral of Awards: Students who take a year-long leave from their
program at Redeemer will have their Redeemer University College
Scholarship reinstated upon return, assuming that the student does
not complete any additional post-secondary studies. Students who
withdraw during the academic year forgo all awards for that year.
Named awards will not be deferred except as follows:
• A student who is in the third year of the Business Co-op program
will be granted 50% of the award in the fall term, and the residual
will be credited to the student’s account in the fall term of his or her
fourth year.
• A student who is in the fifth and final year of the Business Co-op
program and returns for the winter term will be granted the full
amount of any named award in the final term, assuming full-time
enrolment.
• A student who is enrolled in the Environmental Studies program and
who completes the required minimum of two courses at AuSable
during the summer and in the following fall or winter term registers
in a minimum of 3 courses (9 credit hours) will be eligible for the
full amount of any named award. However, Redeemer University
College Scholarships (page 27) will normally be pro-rated for a
3 course (9 credit hours) term.
• Business Co-op Program: Eligibility for all awards in year four will
be determined based on the one-term of full-time studies in year three.
• Approved Off-Campus Programs: Courses completed at an
approved full-term (fall or winter term) off-campus study program
(currently Crandall-Oxford, Redeemer in France, Dordt Netherlands
Semester, and the CCCU programs), together with one term of
full-time studies at Redeemer, will be used to create a year GPA for
award eligibility. However, letter of permission courses and spring/
summer courses (including those completed at Redeemer or through
summer off-campus programs) are not included in the average.
