Subject Area 6: WIDE AREA NETWORKS<br />

Conduct Network Planning and Engineering (NPE) at a Signal Brigade or Higher<br />

Conditions: You are a network management technician assigned to a Signal Brigade or higher. You are<br />

given an OPORD; an operational, integrated system control facility/platform (ISYSCON, RAPTer, NPT,<br />

TNAPS, JNMS, etc.), user requirements, and appropriate references.<br />

Standards: Accepted the plan for inclusion in the OPORD.<br />

Performance Steps<br />

1. Configure the router.<br />

2. Determine connection protocol (PPP, HDLC, X.25, etc.).<br />

3. Determine routing protocol (BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, etc.).<br />

4. Determine IP address and subnet mask.<br />

5. Determine network security management requirements.<br />

6. Prepare HSDN/WAN diagram and OPORD appendix.<br />

7. Identify available equipment.<br />

8. Determine gateways.<br />

9. Monitor the status of the network.<br />

10. Report status to higher headquarters.<br />

11. Develop reconstitution and contingency plan for the network.<br />

12. Develop VTC network (H323) IP based.<br />

13. Determine risk assessment.<br />
