Using a Burette
Using a Burette
Method
1. Set up the burette as shown below
2. Pour a little water into the burette to check
a. That it does not leak when the valve is closed
b. That the water flows smoothly when the valve is open
a. That it does not leak when the valve is closed
b. That the water flows smoothly when the valve is open
3. If all is well, drain out the water and carry on
4. Pour a little of the solution that you’re going to use into the burette to rinse it
5. Let this solution drain into the beaker and pour it away
6. With the valve closed, fill the burette to just above the zero line with the solution.
7. Open the valve slightly and let the solution drip out until the bottom of the meniscus
is level with the zero line
8. Your burette is now ready to use. Remember to read it as shown below and also,
that it reads downwards!
Using a Pipette
Method
1. Pour some of the solution you’re going to use into a clean beaker.
2. Draw a small volume of the solution you’re going to use from the beaker (i.e. not
from the stock bottle) into the pipette using the filler.
3. Rinse the pipette with this solution, let it run out into an empty beaker and pour it
away
4. Draw some more of the solution into the pipette until it is well above the mark.
5. Take of the filler and put a finger over the end of the pipette to stop the solution
coming out. Take your finger off and let enough solution run out into the empty
beaker until the bottom of the meniscus is on the mark.
6. You now have the correct volume of solution ready and can let it run into a clean
conical flask. Remember that a tiny volume will remain in the nozzle. Leave it
there!
