Scanning Electron Microscopy<br />

The prime objective <strong>of</strong> the unit is to provide a<br />

dedicated service to all scientists <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>. This<br />

well maintained instrument is also providing better services<br />

to other universities and research institutions on minimum<br />

payment basis. The unit has two scanning electron<br />

microscopes: i) Leo 430, and ii) Philips 505. The Leo 430<br />

is equipped with Back Scattered Electrons (BSE) mode<br />

<strong>of</strong> imaging with mapping and the line scanning at 180 o<br />

rotation. The elemental analysis <strong>of</strong> the object is possible<br />

through energy dispersive x-ray analysis EDAX (Energy<br />

Dispersive System/EDS). Both microscopes are fitted<br />

with digital image system allowing high resolution,<br />

high magnification imaging <strong>of</strong> a wide range <strong>of</strong><br />

specimens applied to various disciplines, e.g. plant and<br />

animal tissues; plant and animal fossils; earth, material,<br />

leather and chemical sciences; pharmacy; microbiology;<br />

plastic and metallurgical materials; dental and textile<br />

researches, etc. These electron microscopes require<br />

specialized preparative procedures. In addition to the<br />

standard techniques, the unit also <strong>of</strong>fers sample freezedrying<br />

at the critical point for analysis <strong>of</strong> delicate<br />

material.<br />
