On this occasion, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Robert A. Spicer from Open<br />

University, UK also released a festschrift volume (a<br />

special issue <strong>of</strong> the Journal Palynology) in the honour <strong>of</strong><br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. M.S. Swaminathan. With Dr. P.K.K. Nair, a well<br />

known palynologist as the Chief Editor, the volume ‘Vistas<br />

<strong>of</strong> Palynological Sciences’ includes contributions from<br />

leading Indian experts. During the technical session, Pr<strong>of</strong>.<br />

Spicer talked on the origin <strong>of</strong> Asian Monsoon. Shri Rasik<br />

Ravindra, Director, National Centre for Antarctic and<br />

Ocean Research (NCAOR), Goa and a Chairperson <strong>of</strong><br />

the Organising Committee spoke on India’s Polar<br />

programme. Pr<strong>of</strong>. R. Ramesh from PRL, Ahmedabad<br />

elaborated on the application <strong>of</strong> oxygen isotopes in<br />

Dendro-climatology. Glaciologist Dr.V.K. Raina, formerly<br />

with GSI, lectured on monitoring <strong>of</strong> the Himalayan<br />

Glacier. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Yeadong Kim gave details <strong>of</strong> the Korean<br />

climate change programme. Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Head<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Climate Change Programme at DST, New Delhi<br />

highlighted the relevance <strong>of</strong> the symposium and assured<br />

<strong>of</strong> all support for studies in this area. In the afternoon,<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Swaminathan visited the museum, library,<br />

radiocarbon and other labs and interacted with the<br />

scientists, evincing keen interest in all aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>Institute</strong><br />

activities.<br />

On the second day <strong>of</strong> the symposium, Dr. Baek-<br />

Min Kim (Korea) spoke on the accelerating climate<br />

change due to Arctic Sea-ice melting. Pr<strong>of</strong>. I.B. Singh<br />

from the University <strong>of</strong> Lucknow dwelt on the evolution<br />

<strong>of</strong> lake systems in Ganga plains. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Manju Banerjee<br />

presented detailed account <strong>of</strong> the effect <strong>of</strong> climate change<br />

on Western geo-province <strong>of</strong> Bengal, while Dr. Rajiv<br />

Nigam <strong>of</strong> NIO, Goa explained the results on past climate<br />

changes including cyclicities based on marine<br />

foraminifera. Dr. K.P.N. Kumaran, ARI, Pune talked <strong>of</strong><br />

the response <strong>of</strong> vegetation in Konkan to variations in the<br />

South Asian Monsoon.<br />

A large number <strong>of</strong> scientists from University <strong>of</strong><br />

Lucknow, GSI (Northern Region) and other institutions<br />

also attended the sessions. Dr. Ratan Kar, Organising<br />

Secretary, proposed the Vote <strong>of</strong> Thanks.<br />
