PAINTS AND COATINGS<br />
PART 1 - GENERAL<br />
1.1 SECTION INCLUDES<br />
A. Surface preparation and field application of paints and coatings.<br />

1.3 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS<br />
A. Comply with all applicable codes and regulations for handling, storage, and application of<br />
finish materials.<br />
B. Store and apply materials in environmental conditions required by manufacturer's<br />
instructions.<br />
C. Final coats of paint shall be installed under permanent lighting conditions.<br />

1.5 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS<br />
A. Conform to ASTM E 84 or ASTM E119 and applicable IBC Code for fire rated assemblies:<br />
Provide Class A finishes with Smoke development rating less than 450.<br />
1.6 SUBMITTALS<br />
A. Submit under provisions of Section 013300 - Submittals<br />
B. Product Data: Provide Data indicating coating materials, manufacturer’s specifications and<br />
installation instructions. Cross-reference coating system method and application to each<br />
substrate.<br />
1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING<br />
A. Deliver, store, protect and handle products to the Project site under provisions of Section<br />
016000.<br />

B. Store materials in a dry, secure area.<br />
C. Maintain temperature of 50 - 90 deg F.<br />
D. Keep products away from fire or open flame.<br />

2.1 MANUFACTURERS<br />

B. Substitutions: Under provisions of Section 016000.<br />
2.2 MATERIALS<br />
A. <strong>Coatings</strong>: Ready mixed, except field catalyzed coatings, of manufacturer’s best quality of<br />
good flow and brushing properties, capable of drying or curing free of streaks, yellowing or<br />
sags.<br />
B. Accessory Materials: Linseed oil, shellac, turpentine, paint thinners and other materials<br />
required to achieve the finishes specified.<br />
C. Provide highest quality, best grade paint for each type of paint system listed, from one<br />
manufacturer listed above. Primer and finish shall be from same manufacturer.<br />
D. Finish Materials: Conform to applicable code for flame/smoke rating requirements.<br />
E. <strong>Paints</strong> shall achieve the following minimum dry film thickness per coat:<br />
1. Primers:<br />
a. Primers on Steel: 1.5 mils<br />
2. Finishes:<br />
a. Finishes on Steel: 1.5 mils<br />
PART 3 - EXECUTION<br />
3.1 EXAMINATION AND PREPARATION<br />
A. Verify that substrate conditions are ready to receive the Work.<br />
B. Measure moisture content of porous surfaces using electronic moisture meter. Do not apply<br />
finishes unless moisture content is less than 15 percent.<br />
C. Correct minor defects and clean surfaces which affect the Work of this Section.<br />
D. Existing Surfaces to Remain:<br />
1. Prepare existing surfaces in manner recommended by finish coating manufacturer for<br />
scheduled application and to insure cohesiveness and bond of new finish.<br />
E. Metal Surfaces: Remove surface contamination and oils and wash with solvent.<br />
1. Galvanized Surfaces: Apply coat of etching primer.<br />

3.2 APPLICATION<br />
2. Shop Primed Metals:<br />
a. Sand and scrape to remove loose primer and rust, hand clean, clean surfaces<br />
with solvent.<br />
b. Prime bare steel surfaces.<br />
c. Test shop primer for compatibility with finished paint. If paint system is<br />
incompatible with finish paint system provide isolating primer.<br />
3. Uncoated Ferrous Surfaces:<br />
a. Remove scale by wire brushing, sandblasting, clean by washing with solvent.<br />
b. Apply treatment of phosphoric acid solution.<br />
c. Prime paint after repairs.<br />
4. Existing Steel: Remove metal scale and loose materials in accordance with paint<br />
manufacturer’s recommendations follow SSPC-SP-7 Brush Blasting or SSPC-SP-3<br />
Power Tool Cleaning.<br />
A. Apply the Products in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.<br />
3.3 SCHEDULE - INTERIOR SURFACES<br />
A. General: Unless noted otherwise, paint indicated is trade name and product code for MAB<br />
and shall serve as minimum standard quality. All manufacturers shall supply best quality<br />
grade materials. Gloss shall be as selected by Architect.<br />
B. Plaster, Gypsum Board:<br />
1. Ceilings and Soffits Higher than 8'-6" AFF: Unless noted otherwise on the I.D.<br />
Scheme.<br />
a. One coat Rich Lux Prime Fast (037-138).<br />
b. Two coats Rich Lux Low Lustre Latex Enamel (028 line).<br />
2. Other Areas:<br />
a. One coat Rich Lux Latex Sealer Undercoater (037-154).<br />
b. Two coats Ply Tile 530 (059 line) Low Luster.<br />
C. Wood - Painted:<br />
1. One coat Rich Lux Sealer Undercoater (037-154).<br />
2. Two coats Rich Lux Low Lustre Enamel (028 line).<br />
3. Or Two coats Rich Lux Semi-Gloss Enamel (023 line).<br />
D. Steel:<br />
1. Doors and Borrowed Lite Frames::<br />
a. One coat Rust-O-Lastic Anti-Corrosive Primer 073 line<br />
b. Two coats of Rust-O-Lastic DTM (063 line/low sheen) or (043 Line /Gloss)<br />
E. Steel - Galvanized:<br />
1. For shop primed items repair primer damage and paint.<br />
a. One coat Rust-O-Lastic Hydro Prime II (073-189).<br />
b. Two coats of Rust-O-Lastic DTM (063 line/low sheen).<br />
3.4 SCHEDULE - COLORS<br />
A. Finish colors as indicated and selected by Architect.<br />
