GENERAL AD CONSTRUCTION
21
FAN GUIDE/
PRODUCTION SPECIFI-
CATIONS
Build your ad on a document that is the approximate size of
the ad. Do not build your ad on an oversize page: for
example, do not build a 2x2-inch ad on an 11x17-inch page.
Set up full-page ads to bleed size. Be sure to include
bleed when making a PDF. All copy and images should
be contained within the live area.
Use only CMYK (process) color. For spot red, use
magenta. Printer will convert your magenta plate to our
PMS red.
A digital proof must be provided. Laser proofs are used
to check copy and art placement only. It is the advertiser’s
responsibility to check color percentages and placement;
ink-jet and color laser proofs are not accurate for color.
If you choose to supply the ad as a working file in place
of a PDF, we require the following:
• The ad must be built using QuarkXpress, Adobe
InDesign, Illustrator, or Photoshop.
• All graphics must be CMYK or grayscale and included
with the file.
• All fonts must be PostScript Type 1 fonts and included
with the file.
IMAGE/TRIM/BLEED SPECS
Image: This is the live area that contains all text, images,
etc. that must print.
Trim: Final trim size of publication. Any images, text, etc.,
between image and trim may be trimmed off.
Bleed: Necessary 1 / 4 - inch of background beyond trim.
This ensures that the background extends to the edge of
the page.
HOW TO SEND DIGITAL FILES
Contact your ad representative so he or she can notify the
production department whether the advertisement will
arrive via disk, e-mail, or FTP.
• Disk: We accept DVDs, CDs, or Zip disks (100 or 250MB).
• E-mail: Send files to NDads@nhra.com. Maximum file size is
10MB. If items need to be sent in two e-mails, please note
on the e-mail memo. E-mail messages may take up to 4
hours to receive, depending on how busy our service
provider is when the message is sent.
• FTP: Please contact your ad services representative for
site name, user ID and password. Our FTP site can only
be accessed with a web browser.
Files should be compressed using compression
software such as Stuffit for Macintosh or PKZIP or WinZip for
PC. Demo software is available for download from the
Internet. Check all files for viruses before sending.
GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS
We strongly recommend that you supply your ad as a PDF
that is PDF/X-1a:2001 compliant, but we will also accept an
ad that is in a TIFF or EPS format. We recommend that you
create your ad using a professional page-layout program
such as QuarkXPress or Adobe InDesign. For graphics and
scans, we recommend Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop,
and Macromedia Freehand. Ads created in PageMaker or
Corel Draw will not be accepted unless you supply a PDF. We
cannot accept an ad or PDF created from business
programs such as WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint,
or Publisher. Ads that require corrections will be assessed a
$25.00 fee per 15 minutes of production time.
23
PDF SETTINGS
Please refer to PDF settings below or contact your ad
services representative for a set of Adobe Acrobat Distiller
job options. We require your ad to be an Acrobat 4
(PDF 1.3) compatible PDF file distilled using Adobe Acrobat
Distiller. There are many benefits: If properly prepared, PDFs
eliminate the need to send multiple files (fonts, images, logos,
and native applications); PDFs ensure that your file won’t
accidentally be changed; PDFs compress your file size so it
can be transmitted more quickly; and PDFs allow the
advertiser to view how the ad will print.
PDF PRODUCTION, ADOBE ACROBAT 6, 7, & 8
It is best to print to PostScript and then distill to PDF. If you
choose to export to PDF, be sure to use a PDF/X-1a:2001
preset. Adobe Distiller 6, 7, and 8 are supplied with a
default PDF/X-1a profile. Use this profile to distill your
PostScript files. Distiller will prompt you if it is unable to distill
your postscript to PDF. In most instances, the log window
will tell you what is wrong with your file.
NOTE TO USERS OF ADOBE DISTILLER 4.0: Contact your
ad services representative for Distiller settings.
WHAT IS PDF/X-1a:2001
PDF/X-1a:2001 is a standard of PDF developed by the ISO
(International Standardization Organization). It is a means
for graphic arts professionals to reliably and efficiently
exchange final print-ready ads and pages.
PDF/X-1a:2001 requirements:
• All colors must be CMYK.
• Adobe Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) compatible.
• Gray objects must be grayscale.
• Transparencies must be flattened.
• All fonts must be embedded into the PDF file.
Files must be identified as trapped or untrapped
(determined by Distiller).
Output intent must be PDF/X-1a:2001-compliant
(determined by Distiller).
FONTS
Use PostScript Type 1 fonts. Incompatible fonts such as
TrueTypes and Multiple Masters must be converted to
outlines (a graphic element). Otherwise, we will convert
them to compatible PostScript printer fonts. A production
charge of $100 per hour will be billed for time spent loading
fonts and graphics that were not originally supplied.
Many PC-based fonts sent with PC-built ads are not
compatible with Macintosh computers. Therefore, we
recommend that generic PostScript fonts such as
Helvetica, Times, Futura, Avant Garde, Palatino, or Courier
be used for body copy so in-house type changes can be
made if requested by the advertiser. Headlines that use
fonts not compatible with Macintosh computers should be
converted to graphic format.
24
GRAPHICS
All graphics must be CMYK or grayscale. If RGB or spot
color graphics are used, we will convert them to CMYK
or grayscale. NHRA Publications cannot guarantee
accurate color reproduction of converted RGB elements.
If you use graphics from Web sites, convert them to
CMYK or grayscale at a resolution of no less than 200 dpi.
Please note: 72 dpi, commonly used on Web sites, is low
resolution and will print as such.
Layered graphics created in programs such as Photoshop
and Illustrator must be flattened before the file is sent.
Clipping paths must be done in Photoshop, not
through page-layout program extensions. Keep clipping
points to a minimum.
For the best reproduction, we recommend a line screen
of 133 (1,200-1,800 for line art created in vector graphics
programs). Do not oversize images. For example, don’t use
a 10-inch scan for a 3-inch image box.
NHRA Policies
NHRA’s maximum liability for any error in ads is limited to
cost of ad space occupied by error. If publisher’s error
results in advertisement of goods at less than specified
price, publisher will furnish a letter to advertiser to be
posted, noting error and stating correct price, but will have
no liability for goods sold at incorrect price.
Publisher assumes no responsibility for errors in copy.
Claims for adjustment of error must be made no later
than 3 days after publication date upon which said
error occurred.
Copy changes or ads not received by material
deadline will be replaced by copy run previously. Publisher
not responsible for ad materials not called for within 60
days of cover date.
Publisher’s schedule of deadlines must be observed to
assure publication. Proofs, when submitted, will be
reviewed for typographical errors only. Time spent making
excessive alterations to copy will be charged to advertiser.
For mutual protection of publication, advertisers, and
readers, publisher reserves right to edit, reject, or reclassify
ads deemed objectionable or offensive in subject matter,
phraseology, or illustration.
Advertising designed to resemble news matter must
carry the word “advertisement” at the top of the
advertisement.
Advertiser agrees to pay publisher for all expenses,
including attorney’s fees and court costs, incurred to
collect any amount due under a verbal or written
advertising agreement.
Advertisers will be held fully responsible for all payments
on which their agencies and/or representatives default.
Publisher will not be bound by conditions printed on
25
POLICIES
order blanks or copy instructions that conflict with
provisions of this rate card. Advertisers must pay
production charges for any ad ordered and typeset but
not used. Contracts must be bona fide and must specify a
contract year and number of insertions.
Ads are accepted and published on representation
that advertiser and agency are authorized to publish entire
contents and subject matter thereof. Advertiser and
agency will indemnify and hold publisher harmless from
and against any loss or expense arising out of publication
of such ads, including, without limitation, those resulting
from claims or suits of libel, violation of right of privacy,
plagiarism, copyright infringement, or misappropriation of
name or likeness.
Publisher shall not be subject to any liability whatsoever
for failure to publish or circulate all or any issue or issues
because of strike, work stoppage, accident, fire, act of God,
or any other circumstance outside control of publisher. If for
any reason an acceptable ad is not run, publisher’s liability
is limited to running ad in next available issue.
MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS: Rates and information
on tip-ins, inserts, and multiple-page units are available on
request and approval of NHRA Publications. Special adposition
requests, nonstandard unit sizes, special inks, or
any other than normal printing treatment must be
discussed in advance. Bleed ads require a 10% premium.
Insertion orders specifying positions other than covers or
spreads will be accepted on request, but position
specified is not guaranteed unless approved by publisher.
Publisher reserves the right to give a better position than
specified at no increase in rate.
Material not conforming to publisher’s mechanical
specifications will be billed at actual cost for extra
handling charges.
DISCOUNTS: Bulk discounts available to all National
DRAGSTER Display advertisers in addition to Rateholder
discount. Discounts apply to advertising space and not
production charges.
COMMISSIONS: Agency commissions of 15% are granted
to recognized agencies if total amount due is paid in full
within 90 days of invoice. NO AGENCY COMMISSION WILL BE
GRANTED FOR ACCOUNTS 90 DAYS IN ARREARS. Publisher’s
decision is final on agency recognition. 15% discount applies
to display advertising only.
BILLING INFORMATION: Full payment must accompany all
orders unless credit has been established with NHRA
Publications accounting office. Past-due accounts may be
dropped from ad schedule without notice. Any account not
paid in full for a period of 30 days from invoice date will be
assessed a 1.5% per month interest charge until brought
current. On accounts delinquent more than 60 days from
invoice date, agency and advertiser will be notified in writing
26
and ads will not be run until account is settled. Advertisers
delinquent more than 90 days will have Rateholder pulled
from publication for remainder of contract period and will
forfeit 48-issue rate. This may result in back charges for
discounts given. Advertisers may then be asked to send full
payment with all orders until credit is reestablished.
PRODUCTION CHARGES: NHRA Publications’ Production
department can assist in layout, illustration, and design.
Charges for building/revising ads will be billed at prevailing
rates.
PHOTOGRAPHIC SERVICES: NHRA maintains a library of
drag racing photographs. Use of file photographs in NHRA
publications costs $50 each for black and white images
and $200 each for four-color images. Special photographic
rates are available to bulk purchasers. For information,
contact ad sales, (626) 963-7695. For outside publication
rights, available at an additional cost, call Teresa Long,
National DRAGSTER photo editor, (626) 250-2329.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Publisher reserves the right
to delete mention of racing organizations, sanctioning
bodies, logos, race names, and racetrack names at its sole
discretion. Publisher will attempt to make changes without
disturbing appearance of ad. Example: When mentioning
a racer’s accomplishments, an ad may list the class of
competition and the city and state where the
accomplishment occurred, i.e., “Joe Jones captures Top
Sportsman in Rockingham, N.C.”
NHRA-accepted Products: Products that undergo
certification by NHRA Technical Services are found to be
acceptable or unacceptable for use within NHRA racing.
In ads appearing in NHRA publications, the word
“accepted,” as in “NHRA accepted,” is the only wording
allowable. Publisher will attempt to revise wording without
disturbing appearance of ad.
Competitive/Comparison Advertising: NHRA
encourages advertisers to promote products and services
on their own merits. Where competitive argument must be
made, use of competing company’s logo is not allowable.
When comparisons or surveys are advertised, they must be
available for public access. When a company provides an
enhancement service to an existing product, the use of
product names is allowable.
Acceptance of Advertising: NHRA produces family
publications. Provocative language and/or photography
may be refused solely at the publisher’s discretion.
Publisher reserves right at its sole and absolute discretion
to accept or decline any ad. If unacceptable material is
printed inadvertently, publisher will not be bound to run
the ad in question again, nor will running of such
material bind publisher to making such material
