All six of Arkadelphia Fire Department’s fire trucks passed a pump inspection Tuesday.
Each truck was tested by a specialized mobile fire pump testing trailer, which brings a water
source to the fire department. In years past, firefighters had to shuffle trucks around and
shut off a city street while water was pumped from Nowlin Pond to test the pumps on each
truck. For the first time, though, retired firefighter Bob Franklin, who visits 200 fire
departments each year, brought the Draft Commander testing system — one of only a few
which have been manufactured. Franklin and his son-in-law checked each fire pump for
needed maintenance, including oil, seals and valves, as well as each truck’s transmission
and coolant system. The inspections took one hour for each truck, running a series of tests
for water capacity, water pressure and excess pump power. The inspection, said Fire Chief
Ricky Arnold, saves AFD time at no additional cost to the city. Franklin said the trucks
“passed with flying colors.”
