percentage of women 15 years and older seeking work, those that do participate in the<br />

labour force fare better than men. Their unemployment rate is 21.1 per cent, compared to<br />

27.6 per cent for men. In addition, the percentage of those who are self-employed is half<br />

that of <strong>Aboriginal</strong> men and well below that of all Canadian women. It is not surprising,<br />

then, to find that the average annual income of <strong>Aboriginal</strong> women is about $11,900,<br />

compared to $17,400 for <strong>Aboriginal</strong> men. <strong>Aboriginal</strong> women are far behind their non-<br />

<strong>Aboriginal</strong> counterparts, for whom the average annual income is about $17,600.<br />
