Torque Table Revision
Archive
Page : 1/3
Dear VAM® customer,
Please be informed that Vallourec & Mannesmann and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp have decided
to revise the VAM® TOP HT torque table. This will be published officially (VAM® Book, TSLI 450-13, web
based Connection Data Sheet) early November 2012.
This revision consists in:
• The addition of new weights / grades
• For some combinations, the change of the mill & licensees / Field liner max torque values.
Picture 1: Schematic of the revision of the VAM® TOP HT torque table, when applicable
Modification of torque values is ONLY applicable to the following combinations:
• Mill & Licensees and Field Liner max of all grades with 125 ksi yield strength or greater, except
cold worked CRA.
• Mill & Licensees and Field Liner max of all carbon and 13Cr grades for heavier wall pipes (see
table A for the weights concerned).
Table A summarizes the combinations concerned by torque revision (page 3).
The standard field end values (maximum, optimum and minimum for non rotational application)
remain unchanged.
The purpose of this revision is to prevent overtorque problems experienced in production.
The calculation formula of VAM® TOP HT “MTV” (Max Torque Value) has been optimized for high grades /
heavy weights.

FAQ:
1. Is the performance still validated
• Yes. VAM® TOP HT has been qualified as per ISO13679 (2002) CAL IV protocol. ISO13679
CAL IV flowchart includes tests with min torque and with max torque. Since the revised torque
values remain within the previously validated torque range, the prior qualification history and
associated performances remain applicable.
2. What about joints delivered in the past, run or in inventory Is there a risk
• No. VAM® TOP HT joints that have been delivered by Vallourec and Sumitomo have a 100%
control of coupling make-up. All the make-ups are compliant. For strings that have been run,
any risk of overtorque has been controlled and alleviated through field application of the VAM®
acceptance criteria for torque-turn analysis.
3. What should I do for joints in inventory and upcoming runnings
• VAM® recommends that you apply the revised torque table. If for operational reasons, you need
to keep the previous max liner torque values, please contact your VAM® focal point.
Please do not hesitate to contact your VAM® focal point for more information.
