Grade Level: 1 st<br />

Book Summary: The book describes sounds heard in the daytime in both the city <strong>and</strong> the country, as the<br />

seasons change. Includes animals <strong>and</strong> characteristics of each season.<br />

Teachable Themes: Seasons, sounds, vocabulary with [k] sound<br />

Vocabulary/Background: Poster with seasons in English <strong>and</strong> Spanish will be presented for reference.<br />

Text Characteristics/Genre: Informational; Picture story book<br />

Introducing the book: “Today we’re going to read the book “Sh-h! Listen Again! Sounds of the Seasons,”<br />

written <strong>and</strong> illustrated by Joan Berg Victor. As we read, listen for the sounds of the seasons you’re<br />

familiar with <strong>and</strong> those you have never heard.”<br />

While reading the book: The teacher will ask comprehension questions, like the following:<br />

1. “What sounds do we hear the stream making in spring”<br />

2. “What falls from the trees in the fall”<br />

3. “What [k] sounds do we hear in summer”<br />

Three Closing Quotations:<br />

1. “What are the four seasons we learned about”<br />

2. “What sounds from the book are new to you”<br />

3. “Are there any seasons you have not experienced”<br />

Visual Aids: Seasons chart; Vocabulary flash cards; Book<br />

Student Use of the Language:<br />

1. Oral: Student will have the chance to respond to the vocabulary by formulating her own<br />

sentences.


2. Picture/Graphic: Student will draw pictures of what she sees each season, incorporating<br />

each vocabulary word.<br />

3. <strong>Read</strong>ing: Student will be able to read the seasons poster in Spanish, as we recite the English<br />

words together.<br />

4. Writing: Student will provide an explanation, in written form, of each picture she draws.
