<strong>You</strong> <strong>have</strong> <strong>had</strong> <strong>an</strong> <strong>operation</strong> <strong>under</strong><br />

<strong>general</strong> <strong>an</strong>aesthetic. The effects<br />

of the <strong>an</strong>aesthetic may linger on for some<br />

hours. <strong>You</strong> should go home <strong>an</strong>d rest<br />

<strong>under</strong> adult supervision until you feel fully<br />

recovered.<br />

It is import<strong>an</strong>t that a responsible adult<br />

remains with you overnight after your<br />

<strong>operation</strong>. <strong>You</strong> should not drive, cycle,<br />

take alcohol, use a cooker or kettle, or<br />

operate machinery for at least 48 hours<br />

from the time of the <strong>an</strong>aesthetic.<br />

1 Keep your h<strong>an</strong>d level with your chest,<br />

do not h<strong>an</strong>g it down. If asked to use a<br />

sling, do not wear it for longer th<strong>an</strong> 48<br />

hours.<br />

2 Keep all joints moving (these include<br />

fingers, wrist, elbow <strong>an</strong>d shoulder).<br />

Any joints that you should not move<br />

will be put in a splint.<br />

3 Keep your dressing dry. Leave the<br />

b<strong>an</strong>dages alone until you attend clinic,<br />

unless otherwise instructed.<br />

4 An appointment has been made for<br />

5 Please do not wear rings until you <strong>have</strong><br />

been seen in the Orthopaedic Clinic.<br />

6 <strong>You</strong> may be given some pain relief<br />

to take home. If not, take a simple<br />

pain reliever such as paracetamol, as<br />

instructed on the bottle.<br />

7 <strong>You</strong> will be advised about going back<br />

to work (depending on the type of<br />

work you do).<br />

8 Please take or post the GP’s letter to<br />

the surgery within 24 hours.<br />

If you experience <strong>an</strong>y problems such as:<br />

• loss of feeling in your h<strong>an</strong>d,<br />

• continuous oozing through the<br />

b<strong>an</strong>dage,<br />

• severe pain or ongoing nausea <strong>an</strong>d<br />

vomiting,<br />

contact ward staff on 01473 702290 or your<br />

GP.<br />

However, if you are unable to contact the<br />

hospital for <strong>an</strong>y reason or the situation<br />

appears particularly urgent, you c<strong>an</strong> come<br />

to the Accident & Emergency (Casualty)<br />

0845 46 47.<br />

If after 24 hours you develop symptoms<br />

which you think relate to your <strong>operation</strong>,<br />

contact your GP.<br />
