The Manitoba Master Angler record book is packed with entries from the Whiteshell. The all-time record for perch (at 40.64 cm) and rock bass (at 40.64 cm) were both snagged in the Winnipeg River. Avoiding the Hang-ups BY JAMIE ROBINSON Walleyes and snags go hand in hand. Over the years, I have fished many lakes and especially reservoirs that it was near impossible to move mere feet without being hung up. From these experiences, I started utilizing a few simple techniques that helped save precious time retying yet still allowed me to cover as much water as possible while searching for walleyes. One of my favourite techniques that accomplishes this goal is to slowly troll around 1 mph with a bottom bouncer and a floating rig. Most people will run spinners behind bottom bouncers, but spinners sink and therefore, you guessed it, more snags. For the floating rig, I prefer very simple set-ups like the tackle made by the Yakima Bait Company including the Lil Corky or Spin-N-Glo placed ahead of a #4 hook with the bait of your choice. The buoyancy of the Lil Corky and Spin-N Glo lifts your bait off bottom which helps avoid numerous snags. Another more important aspect of this set-up, is that you can actually come to complete stops while trolling and the bait will simply hover in front of the fish. I have done this on numerous occasions while either just missing a bite or when marking fish on my Humminbird electronics. This technique has definitely helped me boat more walleyes. A few other key points to remember are to use bottom bouncers that keeps your line angle at approximately 45 degrees and to only let enough line out so the bottom bouncer will touch bottom when you drop your rod tip 6” to 8”. A very convenient bottom bouncer to use is the ones developed by Fin-tech Tackle. The Fin-tech bottom bouncers come with interchangeable weights, allowing you to quickly change the TECHNOLOGY LOCATION GEAR SCIENCE weight for varying depths and save you time tying. I also use a very similar technique while live bait rigging with no snag sinkers. For this method, I prefer Lil Corky’s or similar round floating beads placed before your desired hook. This technique ensures that your bait stays off the bottom and once again you can stop or feed line allowing the bait to hover in front of the fish. I have had great success with this method while live bait rigging minnows. The minnows actually will fight the Lil Corky’s floating action, which in turn adds another way of attracting walleyes to your presentation. The sinkers I find the most useful for this technique are INSIDER TIPS TECHNIQUE “A few other key points to remember are to use bottom bouncers that keeps your line angle at approximately 45 degrees and to only let enough line out so the bottom bouncer will touch bottom when you drop your rod tip 6” to 8”. the Tech Stiks manufactured by Fintech. Tech Stiks also come with interchangeable weights and a buoyant rattle chamber which adds a little sound to your rig. If you feel you must fish with spinners, you do have a few options to try. First shorten your leader length and try the spinners that incorporate floats instead of beads for their body. A few I have had success with include the Yakima Bait Company’s Walleye Magic and Northland Tackle’s Baitfish-Image Float’N Spin. This summer don’t be afraid to fish the nasty structure, just adapt your technique and get ready to set the hook into a walleye and not a snag. ■ Summer 2011 | HOOKED | 29
