for the Commonwealth's creation of alternative<br />

transportation modes which will decrease our<br />

dependence on gasoline and the automobile itself as a<br />

full source of transportation.<br />

We recognize that there are several outstanding<br />

concerns to address as expressed by some of abutters<br />

to I-<strong>95</strong>. We share and support their concerns for<br />

neighborhood screening and noise mitigation. However,<br />

we also believe that the community-wide benefits of<br />

this path outweigh the perception that some of us<br />

express that the project will have negative impact<br />

with regard to public safety. There is much support<br />

in Newburyport for this project including the shared<br />

use path. Newburyport's Clipper City Rail Trail and<br />

Harbor Walk, a similar shared use path, has been<br />

welcomed by the community and a phase two extension of<br />

this trail system is being developed at this time.<br />

Our final comment I think is regarded for the<br />

east west connection along the Merrimack River.<br />

Early in our discussions with Mass. DOT for through<br />

the <strong>Whittier</strong> Working Group we have expressed the<br />

desire to have an east west trail connection along the<br />

Merrimack River shoreline between Moseley Woods and<br />

Maudslay State Park. The proposal setback a river --<br />
