through an environmental review and it was built out
to the current eight-lane configuration through Exit
57 which is in Newburyport at which time you come out
of that exit near the Park and Ride, then you --
quickly after you pass under the Pine Hill Road
bridge, you drop from four to three lanes in each
direction, then as you approach the bridge you lose
the shoulders and it gets into a configuration that
the bridge is in today. The bridge originally was
built two lanes each direction with a breakdown lane
but during the seventies when this work was being
done, the bridge still had structural life left in it
so it was just reconfigured to get the three lanes
across to the total of six, and there were very
limited changes made to the alignment between that
point in time into the 495 work that had been done in
the late sixties.
So that portion of highway actually is of an
older design, older standards which is why some of the
ramps and the acceleration, deceleration areas feel a
little differently while driving in that area.
So we're going to -- for the purpose and need
standpoint, the purpose of this project is driven by
safety as far as the bridges and roadway geometry,
