<strong>Government</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Northwest Territories<br />

Traditi<strong>on</strong>s H<strong>on</strong>oured <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Skills <str<strong>on</strong>g>Passed</str<strong>on</strong>g> On<br />

During <strong>the</strong> first two weeks <strong>of</strong> June, a<br />

Traditi<strong>on</strong>al Life Skills Workshop was held<br />

<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yellowknife River.<br />

This Workshop was part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Take a Kid<br />

Trapping Program <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> involved over 100<br />

students from <strong>the</strong> Kalemi Dene School in<br />

N’Dilo, Kaw Tay Whee School in Dettah,<br />

Yellowknife’s William McD<strong>on</strong>ald Middle<br />

School <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sir John Franklin High School.<br />

Students were given h<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s-<strong>on</strong> experience<br />

in moose hide tanning, playing Dene<br />

games <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> fish smoking. The riverside<br />

exposure was also <strong>the</strong> perfect place for<br />

building <strong>the</strong> Workshop’s main attracti<strong>on</strong> –<br />

a birch bark canoe.<br />

For Aboriginal people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Northwest<br />

Territories, trapping is a way <strong>of</strong> life –<br />

<strong>on</strong>e that reflects generati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> culture,<br />

traditi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a proud history <strong>of</strong> selfreliance<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> self-sufficiency. Built <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

practice <strong>of</strong> passing <strong>on</strong> knowledge to <strong>the</strong><br />

next generati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Take a Kid Trapping<br />

Program is a comp<strong>on</strong>ent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Genuine<br />

Mackenzie Valley Fur Program. It is a basic<br />

introducti<strong>on</strong> to time <str<strong>on</strong>g>h<strong>on</strong>oured</str<strong>on</strong>g> methods<br />

<strong>of</strong> trapping <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> harvesting wild furs <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

key elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> traditi<strong>on</strong>al Aboriginal<br />

lifestyle. Guy Erasmus, <strong>of</strong> Industry, Tourism<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Investment, oversees <strong>the</strong> Take a Kid<br />

Trapping Program. He<br />

was also instrumental<br />

in <strong>the</strong> development<br />

stages. Erasmus<br />

explained that <strong>the</strong><br />

Program is designed<br />

for young people <strong>of</strong> all<br />

ages. Canoe building<br />

is just <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> many<br />

traditi<strong>on</strong>al life <str<strong>on</strong>g>skills</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

projects provided annually for school-age<br />

youth across <strong>the</strong> Northwest Territories by<br />

ITI under <strong>the</strong> Take a Kid Trapping Program.<br />

The Program (in partnership with <strong>the</strong><br />

Departments <strong>of</strong> Municipal <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Community<br />

Affairs <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Envir<strong>on</strong>ment <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Natural<br />

Resources) is administered through ITI<br />

Brendan Baillarge<strong>on</strong>, participant from<br />

Dettah, paddles in <strong>the</strong> finished canoe <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>skills</str<strong>on</strong>g> such as<br />

trapping, hunting,<br />

fishing, moose<br />

hide tanning,<br />

preparing<br />

traditi<strong>on</strong>al food<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>on</strong>-<strong>the</strong>l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

life <str<strong>on</strong>g>skills</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Instructors, selected for <strong>the</strong>ir expertise,<br />

incorporate: visits to trap lines <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> h<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s<strong>on</strong><br />

experience setting traps, snares <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

fishnets; teach traditi<strong>on</strong>al life <str<strong>on</strong>g>skills</str<strong>on</strong>g>; <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

teach c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> best practices<br />

in <strong>the</strong> preparati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> pelts for market.<br />

Students can also learn snowshoeing, <strong>the</strong><br />

history <strong>of</strong> trapping <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> fur industry,<br />

trapping regulati<strong>on</strong>s, outdoor survival,<br />

participants. These classes are funded by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Workers’ Safety <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Compensati<strong>on</strong><br />

Commissi<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Transport Canada provides<br />

boat safety presentati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

When asked about <strong>the</strong> Program, Guy<br />

said, “It is vital to our culture’s survival. This<br />

Program is an opportunity to experience<br />

<strong>the</strong> l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> as past generati<strong>on</strong>s did, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> learn<br />

how to live as <strong>the</strong>y did. I’m proud to be a<br />

part <strong>of</strong> it. ”<br />

Guy would like to thank <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

staff <strong>of</strong> MACA, ENR <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> ITI for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s to making this Program a<br />
